I view In Upendi more of a comedic fantasy sequence than an actual story element, because the only thing I thought of the entire time was this:
"Rafiki! What are you doing! Rafiki! Stahp! You're insane! The two already know they're in love, for crying out loud! No need to direct a musical about it! Rafiki, YOU'RE INSANE!"
Being a fantasy sequence, it conveys the message that love makes crazy stuff happen in the minds of those in love - You know, things like defying Newton's laws of motion, literally holding stars in your hands, using a lilypad as a gondola, sitting on clouds, using large leaves as parachutes, etc, etc.
That's right, I don't hate In Upendi.
This is what I've been trying to state for a while now. Though some thoughts on what you stated I don't entirely agree with, finally finding someone who doesn't "hate" Upendi is almost as fantasy-like as the scene itself. X3
