Proxies

Hi! Welcome to the Feedback forum.
Before reading anything or asking anything; please check out the FAQs. Your question might be in there. However if you want a better understanding after reading the FAQs, like if it didn't explain it good enough, then by all means ask your question.

Please read the following before posting in this forum...

In this forum you will see an Announcement, and several "sticky" topics. The announcement is the Universal Board Rules. If you are new, read this before doing anything else! The sticky topics will stay above and separated from normal user-made topics in the forum. This is because they outline important information about the board. If you see a sticky topic concerning your issue, please reply with your question or concern in the correct topic. Moderators will see your reply within these topics. Before asking your question, be sure to read the topic and its first page especially. It contains information about your issue that is valuable and may even answer your questions. If the topic does not answer your question, ask your question within the topic, not the forum. If no sticky topic concerns your issue, then you are welcome to ask your own questions by creating a new topic within the forum.

Thank you for keeping the Board Help forum organized!

The difference between the 2: one thing that happens every once in a while, and a message that comes up EVERY time a new member registers.
Some internet providers use proxy's as their addresses (such as AOL), so some people automatically have proxies.
Would it really not say AOL with the IP is traced? I doubt that, though I don't know for sure.
People use proxies to to browse at places like school, and whether you find it wrong or not, someone people actually do have some free time at school and like to browse, and post.
That is up to the network administrators. If a forum is blocked on a school network, it is blocked for a reason. It was blocked at my high school, and I had plenty of free time to browse MLK, but I never used a proxy to work around that, because I typically follow rules. I can easily access MLK at my community college without a problem.
Dynamic IP's do come up at Proxies sometimes (which yes, it can usually be recognized as a dynamic IP, but that's not always the case, and a good lot of members here have a dynamic IP for security reasons).
I would know, I have a dynamic IP. Most IPs are dynamic. And I've never mistaken a dynamic IP for a proxy. Proxies are usually static IPs anyway.
And, people hide for different reasons, just because they're using a proxy doesn't mean that they are a duplicate account, or a troll or spammer.
If someone registers under a proxy, that's a huge red flag, and I know you know that.
Some trolls don't even use proxies, I've seen them do it from their normal IP's as well. So with your logic we should just ban everyone, just because there was an attack.
You are correct, but if the person doesn't use a proxy, the IPs will match. Even when the IPs match a banned member, that still isn't enough evidence to ban the account, as it is now.
I don't want it because it would make new members feel unwelcome. Just think, first thing they see on the forum is IF YOU ARE USING A PROXY YOU WILL BE BANNED.
Where did it say we were going to warn all new members not to use a proxy?
I'm saying it shouldn't be a requirement, because it proves nothing in the first place.
Honestly, an IP match (depending on the conditions, and not necessarily a proxy) is the most solid proof there is. It's easy to pretend to be someone else. It's much more difficult to hack into someone's computer to make it look like you are that person sending the data.

I also don't get why this thing is so bad?
I have not a tech geek at all. My idea of fixing my laptop is 1: shut it down and restart. 2: go see if tech guy is there and 3: throw it out the window.
So i'm unbiased with this, and honestly, this site was blocked at my school for about 2 weeks. I wrote a letter to the security place and told them to unblock it, which they kindly did. So using a proxy at school is just BS. I get how making it so u can't register under a proxy is good, but what if say, I became a troller on here and was banned. Then someone else at my school wanted to register and hey the IP adress would be the same as mine. Would this then mean that they wouldn't let that person register?

^ if you are IP banned, yes. But, that person could easily go home and register a new account.

Actually most of the kids at my school use their school laptops at home, which go through the school server.

I bet if we made a list of all spammers, dups, and troll attacks on MLK, I bet they would show over 90% used a proxy. And if we made a list of legit members who used a proxy, it would be less than 1%.

That is impossibe. The school server would be far out of range. They connect to their own home networks, which should give them a normal ip.

Truth right there.

I doubt anyone who would bother to register for an account on a lion king forum wouldn't have their own computer.

Also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: ... oxy_system

Looks like Wikipedia automatically blocks proxies from editing (unless it is from an existing account), and there are easy ways around it.

@Woeler: indeed, but the laptops may automatically use a home connection to connect to a filtering proxy from the school.

That's what the tech guy told us. Since they get logs of every place we've visited online, at school, home, or anywhere else. I may have heard wrong though...
Is IP like wi-fi?

And Reg... I don't have my own computer, (other than the school's laptop) and I registered with it, and get on everyday with it. So.... Think you lost that argument right there
