What do you think of the 3D version of TLK? *SPOILER ALERT*

Postby TheIvanMuse » September 11th, 2011, 8:11 pm

Do not read this unless you've seen the movie,I don't want to spoil anyone's visit to the theatre.

Spoiler: show
So,I just got home from watching TLK in the theatre and I want to discuss some things about it. This was a preview,so it ran before the actual release date to all theatres. First of all, just to be able to watch TLK in theatres is an awesome opportunity,I don't regret spending one penny on it.

Now... There ARE changes made to the movie. The biggest and most obvious change is the morning report scene. That's right, the song is gone and is replaced with the original scene. There might be mixed emotions about this, but I think most people will agree that this is a good change. I like the original scene more,it's funnier and it gives a bit more character to Mufasa.
The other changes are regarding animation. Many scenes were redrawn so the facial expressions are sometimes a bit different, but that's hardly noticeable. Some scenes are also re-done themselves, but this is also hard to spot unless you're a TLK fan,it's mostly different camera angles and character movements. I don't realy have anything bad to say about this as it gives a little different feel to the movie, but for me it looks awesome. It's a bit of change and it's a good change. I'm glad to know they took the time to actually run over the scenes and think about what could be improved rather than just putting the movie in 3D. For example, notice when Scar tells Simba ''It's out little secret.'' how Simba re-drawn. There are also other examples of course, mostly noticeable during the Hakuna Matata scene and CYFTLT scene when Simba is climbing on the vines.
A lot of the minor mistakes during the movie were fixed. For example, during the IJCWTBK song when the Zebra's are turning their butts to Zazu, you don't see his shadow disappearing on the last frame. Unfortunately, one thing it is still not fixed and it's the thing with Simba's eye color during the scene with Mufasa's ghost.
I've seen the dubbed version of the movie, since I don't have any choice,so I wouldn't know if there's something different with the voices.
The 3D itself is not that visible actually. It's a change from the millions of 3D movies you see lately,so it's not amazing by the 3D feature. It wasn't made as a 3D movie in the first place,so a more gentler 3D projection is the only right way to do it.

I was just amazed by the King of Pride Rock scene at the end,it was just too epic to relive the emotions of it in the theatre. All in all, this was an amazing opportunity and I'm very glad that people have the chance to watch this again and also give the younger generations of children the chance to watch on of Disney's best movies of all time,if not the best ever. There were tons of kids in the theatre today and I'm glad that TLK is coming back after all.

P.S. Check out what I got from the folks in the cinema:

Sounds realy nice, its a shame it's comming so late here in the netherlands (7th of December). I also told the people from the cinema to set a poster aside for me. I cant wait to see it. Thx for sharing yrour experience, now I am 100% convinced to go watch it!

I have no idea when this is coming over here, so I simply couldn't resist reading your review! First of all, THANK GOD they removed the Morning Report! No offense to anyone who likes it, I just always found it out of place and think the original scene is better by far <3 I'm now VERY curious as to what these changes look like exactly, and I really really hope I'll get to find out for myself very soon. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Ivan :)

Yeah, I figured some people would read it anyways...
Haha, yeah,it was a nice surprise to see the Morning report scene gone. I didn't mind it that much, but it was definitely most people's least favorite part of the movie,me being part of that bunch of people.
The changes are pretty interesting,I'm sure you'll appreciate them.
I am too,I hope you see it ASAP.

I thought the 3D was excellant, even though there weren't alot of noticable 3D moments. It was my first ever 3D movie so I have nothing to compare it to XD

Excellent review of the 3D movie! :) I also agree about "Morning Report"; was definitely relieved to see the original was kept rather than the song. The start was particularly epic, in my opinion, particularly with Zazu flying in (just looked so close to me I could've reached out and touched him). Definitely an experience not to be forgotten or regretted! 8-)

I don't have the eye of an artist, so I didn't catch anything that was redrawn. Also my eyes (for some reason I don't understand) do not register the 3D effect. For me it was worth the price of admission (all 4 times) just to see Lion King on the Big Screen again. The one thing I did notice is that they removed the clouds from when Mufasa's ghost leaves.

@ TheIvanMuse: Great souvenir 8-)

For me that was kind of the point,a lot of movies have ''too much 3D'' where you just get stuff flying at you just for the sake of the 3D and not for the sake of the movie,so TLK is different in that sense.

Thank you! Yes,it's much better this way with the old scene. Hahahaha, yeah that was the most noticeable 3D moment.

You don't really have to be an artist to notice it,I just noticed how the gestures and faces were different and also some camera angles.
Thank you!
