@ Rogue: Every time I think you explain Kovu great in one post, you just come in with another post and explain him even better. I've always liked Kovu. His multiple emotions makes him a very 3 dimensional character. It's a shame that not many people see him the way you do Rogue. :(
For me, Kovu is more than just a character, he is a conduit through which I survive the detriments of my environment. He is the strength I need to survive. By understanding him, I can understand myself. His character is much more complex than he is given credit for. Kovu is often given off to be a simple, manipulated being, but he isn't. Kovu is in a constant state of metamorphasis and internal battle. He moves from brain washed tool, to independant rogue, to loving champion against his mother. Kovu is a key player in this story. If he were simply a suitor, then why does Mufasa deem him to be the one for Kiara instead of someone less dangerous to the thrown? His status makes him a necessary piece of this puzzle. Everyone tries to control him, but in reality, he can barely begin to control himself. He is meant for much more than just a little filler character to let Kiara mature.

Indeed, I feel that I can indeed relate to him, though perhaps more than others. Kovu is a complex and conflicted being, and though I feel I begin to over stress his importance, he is worth it. Kovu is a deep and powerful person and should be seen as such, not just as the lucky suitor of the Princess. When we see Kovu for himself, and not for his environment, we begin to see a lion who has succeeded in surviving a hateful and destructive environment and becoming a rather dashing and heroic individual. His only flaw is his hesistance to engage his family. Yet this also happens to Simba, so truly how can we blame him for loving his family and Pride?

"When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings." -William Shakespeare-

When I read this Sonnet, the first character I thought of was Kovu. It seems like this poem is following Kovu's story... at least from what I've gathered. I am a poetic expert, not a Kovu expert. Care to enlighten me on this Rogue?

Hm, though this poem does in fact bear some similarities to Kovu, it has one fundamental flaw. The man whom this poem explains is in a state of self pity and defiance. He believes himself unloved and forsaken. While Kovu is saddened by his "outcast state" he is not in self pity. He realises that he is loved and does not weep for lack of love, but for the loss of it. Kovu does feel himself forsaken, but not by some heavenly force. Kovu accept his state, though unwillingly, and tries to make the best of his poor situation. I am not trying to destroy your heartfelt attempt at percieving Kovu, never that, I just see it this way myself....
