Actually looking at the scene again, I think the author of the topic is right. Remember that the scenes in The Lion King weren't made in order; maybe they created that scene, but then decided to remove the ear rims from adult Simba, or another artist coloured some of the scenes.

Edit: It's most likely it's the second of my choices; later in the scenes, the ears are shaded the way they're supposed to be.

Hm, perhaps incorrect shading is to blame, but I rather tend to believe that these are not physical features but rather shadows. This is due to the camera angle and the time of night. While the "dark ear rims" theory is plausible, I don't personally believe it.

It's just a coloring mistake, it can't be a shadow because they shaded the ears right later :S Maybe the artists couldn't decide between ear rims or plain ears..

But they don't look like ear rims. The contrast between the inside of the ear and the said "rim" is too close, and they fade out slightly, AND they don't go all the way down. It's shading.

They could have changed the design of the ear rims later. Plus, the design of ear rims for males could have been different.. We never see male lions with ear rims in TLK.

I highly doubt the design of adult male ear rims would be different to female and male cubs, and adult females. Seriously, that's just being picky.
