But they don't look like ear rims. The contrast between the inside of the ear and the said "rim" is too close, and they fade out slightly, AND they don't go all the way down. It's shading.

They could have changed the design of the ear rims later. Plus, the design of ear rims for males could have been different.. We never see male lions with ear rims in TLK.
