Revisiting the scene for a sec, she explains that there is no food and everyone will starve. Then Simba remains against going back, when questioned why not then he said "Hakuna Matatta". So you see the subject has changed from the pride starving to the question of whhy he didn't want to return to which he said "Hakuna Matatta". But yes it does raise questions as to why he would ignore it, in his mind though he is responsilbe for the death of not only the past king, but also his father. Which I guess goes some way as to awnsering the question asked in the thread title.
