Revisiting the scene for a sec, she explains that there is no food and everyone will starve. Then Simba remains against going back, when questioned why not then he said "Hakuna Matatta". So you see the subject has changed from the pride starving to the question of whhy he didn't want to return to which he said "Hakuna Matatta". But yes it does raise questions as to why he would ignore it, in his mind though he is responsilbe for the death of not only the past king, but also his father. Which I guess goes some way as to awnsering the question asked in the thread title.

I suppose he was being a little selfish in that he was more worried for himself than for the lionesses of his own pride, but it might have just not occurred to him how much they could be suffering. Or maybe he just didn't know. Furthermore, he felt like an outcast among them, so he might have been afraid of being rejected or completely forgotten... or he was afraid of being a disappointment if he failed to save them. What I'm saying is, it's just not fair to pin the blame on Simba for "chickening out" because I'm pretty sure any one of us would have hesitated as well had we been in a similar situation.

Simba, as well as being traumatised, was left with an incomplete set of life lessons in being who he is. Simba is horrified at the idea of having to face the judgement of his peers and elders for getting his father killed and is unable to overcome this.
