And facing up to your childhood fears, especially one so traumatic as Simba's, is very difficult. "Scars" from things that hurt or scare you when you're young often run very deep.
Simba did in the end face his past, even though he was afraid, and that is courage

Though I think it was the same fear that made him into who he was in SP. Maybe he wanted to be rid of everything that reminded him of Scar, and Zira and her friends certainly would have. (Then there's the theory of Kopa's death, that I support, but it's not canon, so.. =P) The writers of SP could also have made Simba extra bitter so that he could be taught a lesson by the new star of the show, Kiara, too. *shrugs* Not that I mind Kiara, really, but I think that since she was the new heroine, Simba had to step aside.
Simba's behaviour in SP is
plausible, but a bit out of character...
