The Lion King takes place in the Pride Lands of Africa, where a lion rules over the other animals as the Lion King. The movie starts out with an African chant and a beautiful sunrise, and then works its way into the Circle of Life (a song sung in English and a native African language, written by british singer, Elton John, and lyrics by Tim Rice). During the song, Lion King Mufasa (James Earl Jones) stands on the top of Pride Rock and waits for the wise old mandrill, Rafiki (Robert Guillaume), to anoint his son and future king, Simba (Jonathon Taylor Thomas).

Through the tear-jerking hardships of his cubhood and adventures with the Hakuna Matata gang: Timon (Nathan Lane) & Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), Simba (Matthew Broderick) is found by an old friend, Nala (Moira Kelly), and returns to the Pride Lands to reclaim the kingship from his evil uncle, Scar (Jeremy Irons).
