Hodari was born in a time when lions roamed freely, but were slowly being killed by African tribes. His parents both perished, leaving him to fend for himself at a young age. Any normal cub would've died if left alone, wandering the savannah at that age. He could've starved, got killed by other animals or even got killed by another lion. But Hodari was stronger than most other cubs. His large body size and sheer determination helped his survival.
He survived by catching lizards and small birds, as well as scavenging. His first battle was fought at a kill site. Hodari had lain watching the lions eat for ages. He watched in interest as the leader of the Pride pushed his way forward to eat first whilst the lionesses watched from the side, envious. Once they had left, Hodari crept forward to tear at the remains of the carcass with the vultures. He had eaten barely enough when he heard cackling. Out of the shadows came hyenas who spied an easy meal. Hodari, who still needed to eat, knew he had to stay and fight them. Plucking up all his courage, the brave little cub leapt at the hyenas, but the lead hyena swiped out first. Hodari fell down onto the ground. His whole body seemed to be on fire! With all the strength he could muster, Hodari crept away, but not before the lead hyena attacked again, this time a vicious blow down the side of his body. Hodari was getting weaker by the second, but somehow he managed to reach the cover of the bushes where he promptly fainted.
Hodari recovered quickly. He regained his strength and started hunting again. However, as he growing older bigger he needed more food so looked for bigger prey. This meant he was more likely to stumble across a pride. His size didn't help either; the prey could see him more easily.
At the beginning of his teenage life, Hodari was about the size of a full grown adult, yet he was still growing. This was an advantage over other lions, but not when hunting.
One day, he was about to run at a zebra herd when they suddenly charged. He leapt into the air and crashed into a (very surprised looking) young lioness, who promptly clawed at his hind leg in anger. Hodari yelled at her.
"Ow! How dare you! You've already scratched my side when you hit me."
"How dare me? You ruined my hunt!"
"I was my hunt too!??? Hodari protested, and then thought carefully for a moment."
"Did you say it was your hunt?"
The lioness scowled "Yes. Why"
"Not a pride lioness then?"
"What!" gasped the lioness "How did you..."
"You're alone like me. We... we... we could be a team!"
"Team up with you, furball?"
"Yeah. We're both alone;we'll both survive together!"
"Fine, I give you food; you stop lions from killing me."
"Agreed."
Hodari was pleased - he had found a mate.
Together they remained forever ??? they even founded their own pride. They lived in a place they called Pride Rock as they both felt proud of starting a pride. Hodari fought many battles to achieve a large territory and a high status amongst other Kings. He loved his mate, as well as his cubs whom he taught many great lessons (which became traditions as the years grew by). His eldest son became King after him. Hodari chose him a suitable mate ??? another tradition, but his own died at 14 years of age. Hodari lived 2 years longer; longer than most lions by about 6 years! Even now, he is the brightest star of the Great Kings, watching his achievement grow bigger day by day.
