Differences between the DVDs?

Differences between the DVDs?

Postby LeonKFox » November 10th, 2009, 11:58 am

Hiya, I'm looking into getting both of The Lion King movies on DVD, however the second has two DVD releases (the one with the original cover from 1998, and a revised one in 2004) now the 1998 original lends itself to being more expensive, probably because it was among the first DVD's ever released but anyways.

I want to know if the 2004 DVD release actually had any substantial additions as far as bonus content is concerned, because if not then I would shell out a little more and buy the 1998 original used from Amazon or something. Seems nerdy considering it's just box art but...well...look at the two and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah...you can see where I'm coming from with the 2004 one... :ehh2:

So yeah, thanks for any input in advance ^^

Well, what I can say about the 1998 DVD. On Amazon you should get a used one, all of them on there are 99% positive, which is very good, I know this since Sunday I bought the 1992 DVD, the one you are considering. But there is one thing I know about the special edition compared to the 1998 one. Different Animation at one scene. If you buy both, watch the 1998 one first until you get to the end of the crocadile scene. Then go to the 2004 one. Watch closely at Kovu at the crodadile scene, when he falls in the water and sees the crocadile, you will see different animation from the 1994.

But that's what I can say's different from the 1998 compared to the 2004. Hope that helps ;)

So they pulled a George Lucas and messed with the movie on the re-release? Eugh...

Definatley making me lean towards the 1998 one, to be honest.

I dunno, to me Simba is so horribly drawn on the 2004 special edition cover, particulary his facial expression :/

I think they're both horribly drawn, but at least the original 1998 DVD cover stuck to traditional animation.

As for differences in the movie itself, LT pretty much covered the differences

I'm not sure if this applies, since it is differences between the SP VHS and DVD re-release, but: viewtopic.php?f=76&t=2551

Weird, Simba looks almost exactly as he did in the movie on the 1998 cover, at least to me anyway ^^;

And I was more refering to differences as far as extras are concerned.

I think the 1998 cover suffers from lack of Pride Rock :S lol

Hey Leon. :) As far as extras go for the Special Edition 2 Disc set, there's not a whole lot of interesting content that makes it worth the extra disc even. Aside from two little interesting documentaries about the making of the movie (which you can find on YouTube anyways *coughs* on my secondary YouTube Channel *coughs*) so as far as extras go, there's really no insentive to buy the special edition one, aside from having that cool little flip out flap for the DVD, which fits in with the other two releases, but I like uniformity in my DVDs, so yeah. :) The solution that comes to mind, is buy both! lol. If I recall correctly, Amazon has two different versions of the 1998 DVD release of TLK2SP though. A normal one and a "Limited Edition: one. I actually own both, but the Limited Edition one is factory sealed and so I have no idea what specific extras (if any) make it so Limited Edition in the first place. I think it was just the amount that were released that makes it so called, Limited Edition, so if you're honestly just looking for the movie, get the cheaper of the two. Lastly, just be sure to avoid buying your copy of TLK2SP off of eBay, unless you're for certain that it's authentic, or you'll just end up with a cheap Asian copy with lower quality and some rather amusing Asian audio tracks. hehe. :)

Right! Sorry. I should probably read the topic.
As for extras in the new Special Edition, I can't recall everything, but there is a music video of "Love Will Find A Way". :] There is a somewhat long video of the makers and voice actors talking about the film (which was really interesting). And there were also some cool deleted scenes, all of which can be found on YouTube... I think there's more but I'd have to check it out again.

Sorry - when I said that, I meant moreso that the colors are a bit wrong, not the actual drawing.
