It can be argued that Mufasa was actually a pretty crappy king. He knowingly, and probably
intentionally overshadowed his brother, and had a nasty prejudice against the hyenas. It can be assumed that he had made many more enemies during his reign as well, as a result of the formation of the Outlander pride during Simba's reign.
When you're dead and half of your pride wants your brother to be the leader, instead of your son... doesn't that seem like a red flag right there?
Of course, Mufasa is portrayed as reasonable and fair, because he is Simba's idol, and Simba is the main character here. But honestly, I don't think he actually was reasonable and fair. I think he's just as flawed as Simba is, at the very least.
