Mufasa's death was also a huge gamble on Disney's part, as it was the first on-screen death of a major good character. Seeing how much of the movie was spent on developing the Simba-Mufasa bond, yes, it certainly makes Mufasa's death the most painful of any Disney movie.

^^ Could not have said it better myself.

It was one of the moments where you just keep telling yourself "no, he's going to OK". But in the end, I think we all know what happens. So yes, defiantly the saddest of any Disney movie.
You are what you love, not who loves you.

Call me sadistic, but I didn't actually feel bad when Muffy was killed.

The first time I actually watched The Lion King was November of 2012, and at the time, people on the Internet were making memes of his death, praising it for its emotional impact. And, of course, this was a huge spoiler for me, not having seen the movie and all, so when I actually got to watch TLK, I was watching it while being fully aware that Muffy was going to get killed by Scar.

Just like how knowing that Vader was Luke's father really messed up Star Wars 5 for me.

And... I'm just one of those people with overly comical minds... Humour, be it accidental or intentional, takes away from the sad emotional experience of things. The spoiler will tell you more.

Open at own risk: show
When Muffy died, I thought Simba kind of asked for it, since he just couldn't wait to be king. Be careful what you wish for, Simba.

For a long time, I really didn't think so.
I first saw TLK when I was very, very young, like 2 or 3. I used to watch it all the time, and to me then, Mufasa's death was just a part of the movie. Also at that age I had never experienced death or loss in real life, so I didn't understand the true impact losing someone so close to you as your father could have.

Now that I'm nearly 17 and have lived a bit more of life I finally understand just how huge it is. I remember the first time I watched the movie after nearly 4 years of completely ignoring it a huge wave of grief just swept over me during that scene. As DGFone said, such a huge part of the movie up to that point was dedicated to showing how close they were, I could hardly bear to see them ripped apart so quickly. I recall pausing the DVD a fraction before Mufasa gets torn off of the platform and thinking "That was the last time he ever looked into his father's eyes", before very nearly bursting into tears.

It's the saddest Disney death for me, but as for saddest moment overall, I'd have to give that to "Baby Mine" from Dumbo. I always cry watching that scene.

One of the saddest, yes, and helped by the wonderfully orchestrated music. Boohoohoo.
In an learned animationy point of view, the death of Bambi's mother was in some ways a greater impact. Even though you do not see the dead animal, the gun shot, the silence and slow animation, whilst the snow falls, that follows as Bambi's father tells the fawn that 'she will no longer be with you' has such an emotional impact.

As far as I can remember, certainly had the most emotional gravitas when compared to any other death yeah, due to the reasons that have been covered by others. Oh yes, Ninaroja I remember the Dumbo scene very well... :(

Mufasa's death has always been quite sad but not to the point to make me start balling. That's not to say it hasn't made me tear up but no movie has ever made 'cry cry'. Home movies on the other hand... But back to the point.. I'd say it's one of the saddest deaths but to name it the saddest scene Disney has ever made. Well, that would depend on the opinion of the person wouldn't it? A few scene that always makes me cry like a baby are 'Baby Mine' from Dumbo and 'Goodbyes may seem forever' from Fox and the Hound.
