This is the way I see it:
Naturally, we do what we are told. We believe in what we are told to believe in and don't believe in what we are told is fake.
We have to think for ourselves if we ever want to see the raw truth. The raw truth is that no one knows how the heck anything happens.
So, essentially, we make up stories and tell ourselves they are true, because our egotistical minds cannot handle the idea that we live in a crazy, unpredictable, horrific universe that we really know very little or nothing about.
We have absolutely no concrete knowledge concerning how or why we exist. Life is amazing, but it is also unbelievably frightening and confusing. Our values and beliefs are really only a big Simba plushie that we cling to, to help us face such a reality.
We all have something that takes that place, even if it isn't something spiritual, per se.
Whatever those beliefs are, they are only beneficial until they begin to condemn other people or stand in the way of progress. Then it can become problematic.
