I can't say I hate them nor can I say I love them.
On one hand, they were a major part of the plot. They had to exist, else the story wouldn't be the same. Their corny attitudes was also what made the movie appealing to kids.
However, I have to say that the movie would have taken on a more serious note without that corniness. During CYFTLT, I was laughing at Timon's remarks on Simba and Nala's love, instead of, as the song title suggests, trying to feel the love. They are a huge part of the plot and at the same time they sort of... prevented me from fully appreciating the story because of their distracting humour.
Thank goodness I watch movies alone at home - I don't think many people would want to have someone randomly laughing out loud during a romance scene.
And then there's the hula dance part which made the final fight seem less epic because they're such a funny bunch and lightened the mood a little too much.
T&P make TLK1 feel more like a whimsical comedy than a story about love and the Circle of Life as it was intended to be, but I'm willing to accept their existence as a story element. However, I understand that TLK1.5/3 was meant to focus on T&P, and thus pretty much the entire movie was comedy.
I'm going to have to sit on the fence for this one...
