It's no more disgusting than stepping into a public bathroom while wearing shoes. I hope you're wearing shoes for that.

That's just it. The smaller surface area means that the pressure is higher. That's why, if you lay on a bed of needles, it won't puncture your skin. But if you step on one needle, it will go right through your foot. When the weight is spread out, it creates less pressure. A smaller area of contact is much more effective at killing things.
