Palestine official sovereign state

Palestine official sovereign state

Postby Woeler » November 30th, 2012, 11:02 am

So, any opinions on the UN declaring Palestine a sovereign non-member state?
The UN General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to recognise Palestine as a non-member observer state - a move strongly opposed by Israel and the US.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said this was the "last chance to save the two-state solution" with Israel.

Israel's UN envoy said the bid pushed the peace process "backwards", while the US said the move was "unfortunate".

The Palestinians can now take part in UN debates and potentially join bodies like the International Criminal Court.

The assembly voted 138-9 in favour, with 41 nations abstaining.

Hundreds of Palestinians celebrated on the streets of Ramallah, in the West Bank after the result was announced.
If Palestine wishes to become a nation, it better start acting like one.

Yeah, well the big problem is: Palestine is now recognized as a sovereign state which means that they can take part in the ICC. This means that Palestine can charge Israel for war-crimes at the International criminal court in The Hague.

Doesn't matter. Now that they are a state they can propose resolutions at the ICC

And no less than three of the five Big Players in the UN told Palestine not to do that. Which makes sense. You just became a nation, but are still desperate to make peace with Israel. What do you do? Anger it by taking it to court. Dat Logic.

Or to put it in another way: Even France, big supporter of Palestinian independence, told Palestine not to go to court.

And for once, I agree with France. Palestine has a right to exist just as much as Israel does. But it should see that the path to peace is more rewarding than taking Israel to court.

Although I disapprove of their actions against Israel, Palestine should be recognized as an independent state.

Don't mind me, I just find it funny after reading on the news how the U.S is against Israel building 3000 houses on the jordan west-bank in a nation that trains it's own children to carry bombs and commit suicide strikes.

And you think Palestine cares that you find it illogical.

No, but if the U.N. members are any smart, if Palestine will simply take its new nationhood and waste it, they shouldn't take it away to revoke Palestine's new status. Being a nation takes responsibility.

And what makes me sad, is that as much as Palestine has a right to exist, the UN still gave it nationhood just like that, without waiting for Palestine to prove that it is worth giving nationhood to.
