Trolling has existed for as long as internet forums themselves have been around. Nobody yet has found a way to completely prevent it. Given that I come here at least every couple of days and haven't actually seen any of these spamming attacks in progress, I think the staff is doing an excellent job at dealing with it. I agree that there's no need to add more red tape.

@Wildsimba I don't see what the big deal is. How long does it take to check if it's a dup, when the mods already are going to be there verifying the post. You act like you don't want dups and spammers to get caught -.-

Wow, now you're accusing me. I just said I don't think it's necessary to add more red tape across the forum. You do have to remember I was a mod here no less than a week ago and I would know about this stuff. I know the exact process in order to approve/disapprove posts, and it can already be a long process if the person turns out to be a spammer. Every new member could easily look suspicious because they are new. There's no good reason to just ban them right out, unless there's absolute proof towards it. If they're caught, then fine, but there's no reason for the mods to start digging for information from every single new member on the forum, that would just be silly.

You keep saying that, but I don't know where you are getting it. Here's the difference it would make:

1. When mods approve posts, they check the IP, and see if it's a proxy account. That's all

2. Members cannot use a proxy to register

A minor change for members, and a minor change in procedure for moderators. When MLK suffers two Nazi attacks in one day, that's not asking for much.


And you didn't answer my question for legit reasons people need a proxy on this site.

You know how long it takes? Seconds. It's the easiest thing we can do, aside from stopping the count to 35.

You may not have looked up the IPs of new members, but I always do. And with the amount of dupes and troll attacks we've had recently, it is in no way unjustified.

TRP is right. It's only a very, very, small change. And I doubt even if the new procedure were to be implemented it would change much at all.

This I can agree with. You can wait until you come home if you want to register a legitimate account, and if you absolutely have to use a proxy to access MLK during school or some other place that blocks it, as long as you are already registered, you will still be able to use a proxy to get onto MLK with a legitimate account. Just don't expect to be able to register a new account under a proxy.

Some internet providers use proxy's as their addresses (such as AOL), so some people automatically have proxies. People use proxies to to browse at places like school, and whether you find it wrong or not, someone people actually do have some free time at school and like to browse, and post. Dynamic IP's do come up at Proxies sometimes (which yes, it can usually be recognized as a dynamic IP, but that's not always the case, and a good lot of members here have a dynamic IP for security reasons). And, people hide for different reasons, just because they're using a proxy doesn't mean that they are a duplicate account, or a troll or spammer. Some trolls don't even use proxies, I've seen them do it from their normal IP's as well. So with your logic we should just ban everyone, just because there was an attack.

I don't want it because it would make new members feel unwelcome. Just think, first thing they see on the forum is IF YOU ARE USING A PROXY YOU WILL BE BANNED. Not a very nice message to send to a new member, at all. And I usually checked IP's too, Regulus, I'm not saying to NOT do it. I'm saying it shouldn't be a requirement, because it proves nothing in the first place. If a member is suspicious, they'll show themselves eventually anyways. These attacks happen, you as a staff member are supposed to just do your job and act accordingly. It's good to prevent, but if you act too boldly, it'll scare people off.
