Alright, so back in the day when I was depressed I wrote my first short story (well, first one outside of school that is). It is not some of my best work since I wrote it years ago, but I didn't really have a reason to not share it with you. So yeah... Be warned, it may cause you to shed some tears. Then again, it may not. It all depends on you and your emotions. But I remember that I was crying when I wrote this...
Alone, sitting in a small, dark cage. Growls and barks bursting my ears, and yet it seemed completely silent. And even though the barking was making me deaf, I could still hear footsteps come closer and closer. The steps were heavy, I guessed it would be a human with big boots. The footsteps stopped by my cage. I looked up and saw a man. He was dressed in leather and had fur on his face. He opened my cage and lifted me out. "He'll work!" The man said and carried me to the main desk. There, he paid some money and took me outside. He dropped me into the back of his truck and drove away.
I was so excited when I got to his house. I was ready to run around and play, but he grabbed my neck and lifted me up. I gave a little scream, but he didn't seem to care. "Mutts belong in the hunting hut." He said and dumped me into a dark, smelly room. Again I heard growling, it sounded like it was coming from 6 different dogs. Suddenly, I felt a larger creature jump on me, and it was trying to bite my neck. I quickly pulled my paw closer and made the big canine bite my paw instead. Just then the doors opened, and the man who brought me here burst in. "Stupid hounds! Leave him alone!" He yelled and pulled the larger dog away. He picked me up roughly, and carried me into the house where he put me on the couch. He patched up my paw and gave me some water. "Now, tomorrow we work till we sweat!" He said and left. I lay there, staring at the fireplace, dreaming that today could just be over.
The morning sun rose upon the horizon. The man gave each dog a mix of food which contained raw meat, bread, raw eggs and milk. The dogs wolfed it down and started jumping around. I really didn't want to eat it. The smell was horrible. "Look pal, you gotta eat." He said and moved the bowl closer. I whimpered and looked away. "Stupid mutt! I try to be nice and you're still not happy! Well, this is life, and if you're too weak I will personally kill ya!" He yelled and threw me some fresh fish. I ate a wee bit of it and walked out the door. "You better behave!" He yelled and slammed the door behind us.
We had driven for hours when the car finally stopped. It was snowy and cold, I felt my paws getting frost bite. He attached me to a sled along with the larger dogs. I was placed somewhere in the middle, next to a brown female. "Alright stupid dogs! GO!" He yelled and the dogs started running. But he wasn't pleased, he quickly pulled out his whip and beat them till there were spots of blood in the snow. They continued through the day.
When we got back, he let the dogs go into their hut, but he stopped me. He lifted me up by my neck, again I screamed. "I'm gonna teach you a lesson, ugly mutt!" He said as he pulled me into a room. He immediately chained me to the floor, which was very warm. I started breathing faster and faster, the heat seemed to be choking me! I saw the man pick up a giant stick made out of iron. "I told you that if you didn't behave, I would kill you. And I meant it!" He lifted the giant stick. I whimpered and closed my eyes. I screamed out in pain as he hit my ribs. I screamed once again as he hit my back. The third time he hit me, I made no sound...
I woke up in the arms of a little girl, I could not move and I couldn't make a sound either. The young girl handed me over to a vet. It hurt as I got in the vet's arms, and yet I could feel nothing. I had no idea how I got here, or who the little girl was, even though her touch was so familiar. The vet examined me, and eventually let the little girl come in. I looked at her, I didn't know who she was. She was wearing warm and fuzzy clothes and had a bracelet on. That bracelet, I had known it all my life. Then I recognised her, she had promised I would be hers one day. "Hey boy, I wish I knew what happened, but I don't." She said as a tear fell from her eye and down her cheek. I wished to lick it away but I couldn't reach her even if I tried. "But now it's time to say goodbye, and I will stay with you till you cross the rainbow bridge. I will stay with you even longer if you want. I will stay with you forever..." She said and more tears fell down her rosy cheeks. I whimpered once to tell her it would be okay. And as I lay there, I thought of how if I could speak, I would tell her who it was, so no other dogs will suffer like I did. And if I could speak to humans, I would tell that man, that I was counting on him to care for me, to feed me, to love me. I felt the needle send the fluid into my body, I looked at the ceiling and said to myself, "I was counting on you..." as I faded away.
The End
