Has the Lion King held up?

Has the Lion King held up?

Postby Harvs » August 30th, 2012, 7:32 pm

Yes, yes, I know. I know you're all going to say "yes! yes! yes! yes! YES!", but please read this first.

We're not here to point out the obvious. Personal preference aside, The Lion King is just another movie, regardless of how well it did when it was released, and how well it did when it was rereleased in 3D. We all know that it's a great movie. But just because something is great, doesn't mean it's flawless.

Now then, given the mistakes of the film, be it slight animation errors, bad lines, or plot holes, my question is:

Has the Lion King held up over the time it's been out?

I'm not here to start controversy or change your opinions. I'm just trying to strike up a conversation on an interesting topic.

With my understanding of the question, yes it has. It hasn't aged; the jokes, scenes and so on still work now because they don't particularly call upon a certain time. The animation and effects still look great; in fact the wildebeest scene looks better than a lot of CGI scenes have done in 2D films since. Aladdin would be an example of a film that has aged a bit due to the early '90s pop culture references.

I'm going to be boring and say yes. Because I really believe it has. Every time I watch it I wonder how it's even possible for it to be 18 years old, the animation and special effects are awesome IMO and don't look outdated at all.

Agreed with this. The Lion King is something that's stuck with me, and many more people. The movie is pretty unforgettable. I think matched against some of the recent animation works, it would still come out on top.

Is the Lion King perfect? No. Is it much better than the stuff that we are forced to watch these days? Absolutely.

It had a great story to tell, great morals to teach, looked great and had an excellent soundtrack. Most family movies these days might do well in one or two of these categories, but I have yet to see a CGI film that mastered all four.

Speaking of CGI: The Lion King used CGI to help tell the story. In many movies these days, the CGI is the story.

I would also say "yes". Lion King means a lot to me. And how many time I'm watching it, I like it even more. And, personally, I don't think any newer animation movie will soon overtake it. Plot is great, animation also. And, of course, voice actors.
There are some mistakes, of course, but doesn't every movie have, at least, a few?

^ You're absolutely right. EVERY single movie ever made has a few mistakes if you look close enough. They don't bother me, because I never really notice them lol. Unless they're REALLY obvious. But they usually aren't...

Another boring answer: Yes, yes it has. If it hadn't, I don't think I'd like it enough to consider joining a forum dedicated to it.

Seriously, though. The Lion King is a house made of steel, constructed in a village of straw huts.
