It's a poem. Isn't poetry supposed to be symbolic? USA: Northern Hemisphere. President = King. President's land = kingdom.
Believe me, it's very easy to tweak your poem to sound like it's about the US. Especially when you add your "Lives taken for granted", "The great era of power" (is over), and "The Northern empire" (is over), add to your rather famous attitude towards the US, and it's easy to see how it applies.
But if you were more literal than that, I think it's about Great Britain. An empire that was proud to have so much land that "the sun never sets on the British Empire", and completely whittled down to the mainland, and finally officially declared over in 1999.
