^ I always do the background before shading. It makes it easier to visualize which parts should be shaded.

Good thinking! I've done that too on occasions but since I love doing shading I often can't help myself haha. I tell myself I'm just gonna see what it'll look like etc. and before I know it....it's basically finished lol. I have a pretty good vision of what I want for the background though so I really should do that first. It does make things easier.
