Scar's original plan

How did Scar know that Mufasa would climb the rock?Or was his initial plan different?

I don't think it was his original plan. Instead, I think Scar saw Mufasa climbing up the rock, and watched from there. As far as his initial plan, I don't really know what it would be, exactly...

I thought that Scar's original and only plan was for Mufasa and Simba to die in the stampede. So if anything, Mufasa surviving and giving Scar the chance to kill him personally was in a way an added bonus. But then Simba survives...

But during the stampede, Scar had no intentions of going down there to help anyone. He watched from above to make sure that Mufasa and Simba would die, which is how, after he tossed Mufasa off the cliff, he was able to lie to Simba and also get the hyenas in position to "kill" Simba.

This exactly. You can actually see Scar pacing around angrily as he watches Mufasa rescue Simba from the tree with almost no problem. He probably hadn't been counting on Mufasa's strength to save him from the stampede and was waiting for his second plan to fail. At least until he saw Mufasa dangling helplessly off the edge and saw the opportunity to at least fulfill a part of his original plan.

Well, Scar's actual original plan was to have the hyenas kill Simba in the Elephant Graveyard, and then somehow kill Mufasa. But, we all know that failed, so Scar had to come up with a new plan: kill Mufasa and Simba in the gorge.

As many times as I have watched the movie, I would think everything in Scar's plan in the gorge worked out perfectly as he planned it. Scar, knowing how intellectual he is, wouldn't underestimate Mufasa's strength, so I don't think Scar was planning for Mufasa and Simba to die in the stampede. Plus, Scar was waiting directly at the top of the cliff for Mufasa to emerge from the stampede.

Also, it seems Scar was planning for Simba to run from the Pride Lands, because he told Simba to practice his roar so he would think he caused the stampede. He just needed a one-on-one uncle-nephew talk with Simba to cement that thought in his mind, have him run in shame, and have the hyenas to do the rest.

Again, I don't think it wasn't a surprise for Scar that Mufasa was able to emerge from the stampede. He was looking forward to it. However, I can be wrong!
