I think shutting down the server is a little extreme, especially when there are alternatives. I'd reccomend the plugin "Logblock" which is super efficient and easy to use, and has a rollback area option for certain areas that have been griefed. It's by far the best plugin ever in my book, I use it all the time on my server.
I'd just like to add that out of all the communities out there, this is the least expected server for me to have griefers. Really surprised as a matter of fact. A damn shame

Sadly for me i can't play due to the school network being a giant poo and not letting me play online Minecraft, i shall be on half term soon so i shall have fun playing during that time.
