To be honest, I think it's about the line of the lion kings. Mufasa being first , then Scar , then Simba.

I think it's about the blood line of the kings, and Disney shows us different types of kings. First there is the big, wise, and gentle giant king, Mufasa. Then there is the wicked, scrawny, and shrewd king, Scar. Then last but not least, Simba, who was supposed to be the greatest lion of them all.

I believe it's named "The Lion King", because the movie is about Simba's journey to become king.

Yet... It could also be named that because the movie is also about scar who kills his brother in order to become king. Most of the movie he is "king".

Or maybe it's named for mufasa for the whole "great kings of the past" scene.

You'd never know for sure unless Disney told you. But there are plenty of kings in the films that it could be reffering too.
