I'm not sure what problems you're referring to. In my previous computer, I had two 512MB sticks, and added in two 1GB sticks, for a total of 3GB without any issues.

Just a few days ago, I had two 2GB sticks, and I added in two 4GB sticks to my computer, for a total of 12GB. Once again, no problems. Just make sure the memory sticks are tested to work with your motherboard of choice.

And you have enough ports. Many motherboards only have ports for two RAM sticks...

Motherboards with only two memory slots are definitely the minority though. As of now, the 'egg has 101 AMD motherboards with 4 DDR3 slots, and only 55 with 2 slots. For Intel boards, there are 171 with 4 DDR3 slots, and 85 with 2 DDR3 slots. I'm guessing those with only two slots are used mainly in budget OEM systems.

The reason I went for the 2600 is because I really don't want to mess with overclocking. And are you suggesting I go to 12GB? I would, except then the dual-channel won't work with anything other than 2 or 4 chips installed.

Since you have 4 slots never ever use 1 or 3 slots. Because ram works in pairs. That's why it's also no good to have 2 different ram sticks in your pc (e.g. 2gb and 4gb) i have 4 slots and i use 2x4gb, the other two slots are open. As you say, the dualchannel wont work anymore and that can cost you a lot of performance. You can overclock, just dont overdo it. Mine runs 3.2ghz and now it's running 4.9ghz. You just need a decent cooling system. I suggest the H70 cooler

I don't want to mess with overclocking (at least not in the predictable future. my parents have forbidden the use of liquid cooling in the house and I don't want to mess with overclocking when all I can work with is fans, fans and more fans), which is why I chose the 2600 i7. I will definitely be using 2x4GB at this point as well.

I will definitely be overclocking things in several years when I make my next project. I picked up a stainless steel thing that work was about to throw in the dumpster. It's the same size and shape as a large ATX case and will accommodate a watercooling system inside. With the proper mods that thing will look and be epic. That will be my overclocking project. After I get my own place

^ why no liquid cooling? oh well. The i7 is one of if not the best processor out there and with 2x4gb of ram you will get massive frame rates. What kind of graphicscard do you have? Overclocking will get you better framerates but they get so high it's invisible to the human eye (talk about nonsense XD)

As for the liquid cooling, they are worried that something will go wrong with it and the liquid will get on a component it shouldn't and start a fire.

You know what, screw liquid cooling. If you're going to do a case mod, do something like this.



Just make sure you monitor the humidity in the case. Depending on your climate and air conditioner, there could be condensation in the case, and that wouldn't be good. But I think it would probably be fine.
