it was around 9 years ago that I first really became into Pit Bulls. I was always a dog lover and knew a lot about dogs in general, but nothing much about pits or similar breeds. I was a volunteer at the local shelter for quite awhile before I had any real contact with one. For some stupid reason I held back because of what was said about them. Then I realized just how stupid that was, I mean, here I was, a animal lover, believing animals should be treated with love and respect, and I was judging one based on myths and fear.

So as I said hello to each dog, I opened the kennel that held a dog named Primrose (whom I was allowed to name) She was a young adult, no more than a year I'd say and I fell head over heels for her. Of course I couldn't have any dogs as I lived in a rented duplex with my parents and pets weren't allowed. But I came to see her everyday, and although I looked forward to seeing her I was sad that no one had come for her. There was even a hold on her that someone dropped when they didn't want to wait for her to be spayed, (it would take longer because she was in heat at that time) She eventually did get adopted, but I haven't forgotten her and hope her owner is a good one.

this is me and Primrose, they were taking pictures of dogs for Petfinder and saw me with her and snapped this, lol although I didn't know it at the time. For the longest time the picture was used on the bulletin board at the shelter as well as the website, it was very special for me.

from then on I took special care to notice the pit bulls at the shelter more often. I met wonderful dogs such as

and Sasha

and many many more.

I then studied everything there is to know about Pit Bulls and all similar breeds and became quite a bully breed ambassador.

a year after I got married we fostered a 6 month old pup named Fred. oh he was such a cool dog.

Image

Image

we fostered many other dogs and then decided it was time to adopt a dog. I have many rescue friends so we ended up getting a 3 year old pit/dane mix named Flash. He's a great dog, and is very attached to my husband who used to not care much for Pit Bulls.

here he is

I've always wondered. They are forbidden here in the Netherlands, but why?

They're very agressive dogs. The laws are actually pretty strict for having one in America as well.

I would rather have a dog that's a little bit less likely to bite my leg off.

has no one learned the lesson taught on Simba's Pride???

People misunderstand these dogs. They are very easily trained and people have abused that. They are extremely loyal to their owner and bad people abuse that. Would you like to see the awful things humans have done to these dogs?? Do you know the American Pit Bull's history as the American family dog. Have you ever see "Our Gang" Petey the dog was a registered Pit Bull. the first war dog was a pit mix called stubby. People tend to believe anything the media tells them and the media knows this, how many happy stories about anything are on the news. I have dozens of awesome stories that have happened to real people. and I have my own story as well how one helped save my live. They are banned because it's easier to put things away then to understand them. what people don't understand, they fear, and what they fear, they wish to destroy.

I have studied not only the bully breeds, but all dogs as well. It's a great passion of mine. The pit bull is not an aggressive breed by nature, and you are missing the really big point. Pit Bulls trained to fight are NOT suppose to be human-aggressive. the people in the rings had to be able to handle the dogs, a dog that bit a person was not worth the money and was, very harshly, killed. Dog-aggression and people-aggression are NOT the same thing. There are many breeds trained to be guard dogs and are trained to be human-aggressive. That wasn't the Pit Bull's job. but thugs today over breed and under-treat their animals horribly and that can make for an unpleasant dog, regardless of the breed. Some dogs get over the abuse and go on to be great animals, and i could show you many stories of that. but for one example there was a dog in Canada, that was to be killed for no other reason than his breed, he was sent to the US and is now a top cop dog.

all I can say is, from experience, before you judge an animal, truly get to know an animal. They are all individuals as we are, so even in the same breeds, whether a 'pit bull' or a 'chihuahua' there will be differences. nobody likes labels, so why do we do it to the animals we are suppose to take care of and protect?

Chihuahuas- ankle biters
Pit Bulls- downright evil
Rottweilers- untrustworthy
Jack Russells - too hyper
Poms- too noisy
Dalmatians- not kid friendly
and the list goes on. but I have dealt with all these dogs on many occasions and treated right and throwing away the junk I was told to think about these dogs, I have found they are none of these things. Does it happen? yes. Do Pit Bulls bite? Yes, but to say they do so more than any other dog in unfounded, unfair and treating them like they are a monster instead of another dog. Have I been bitten by dogs? oh yes yes yes. Did I call a petition to ban every single one of the breeds I've been bitten by? NO. Do I still treat them right? Yes. and with a little patience and love, I have won over many hard-hearted animals, I just wish people were as easy.

I'm torn on pitbulls.

On the one hand, my dog Wally is a Pit/Lab Mix and he is quite honestly the dumbest, sweetest, most affectionate playfull goofball dog I have ever come across.

On the other hand, though, in all our trips to the dog park we've seen a couple pretty tense experiences (once with Wally, a couple times with bully behavior at other dogs,) with full-breeds specifically out of the other kinds of dogs there that do make me view Pitties as chancy.

So I don't know. I think its that they *are* great with people but can still be inherently aggressive with animals that makes me uncomfortable. It leads to a lot of, er, misplaced "confidence" in how comparatively socialized their dog is on the part of their owners, and an owner's misplaced confidence scares me once they're pet's turned loose in the dog run.

I'm just not that much of a dog lover to begin with. Especially dogs that tend to be aggressive.

Guns kill people. But are they banned? No, but they are kept controlled. Dogs should be the same way. There's nothing wrong with having them as pets, but if something happens, I think the owner should be responsible, just as owners of guns are responsible for their weapon.

yes, but breed-specific legislation isn't the way to go, it only ends up punishing those who take care of their dogs. It was a pain when we were renting to even find a place to allow pets at all, and then add on top of that my dog is part pit. He's looked down on not because of what he has done, he is looked down on simply because of what he was born as. But I guess I can't be surprised society would do that because as it is, many are still very racist, judging who someone is based on looks and not on who the individual is. and I can't tell you how many times people will pet a dog at the shelter that I am walking and then when asked and I tell them what the dog is they all of a sudden freak out. I mean, really? Did that sweet lil dog you were just loving up change? No. You did. He's still the same dog, but now you have deemed him worthless because he wasn't the lab you thought. It's crazy.

Pit Bulls do not belong at dog parks period. even if they aren't at fault, and another dog starts a fight, the pit bull will be the only one blamed. dog parks are good used properly, but so few people do so. private dog runs are better, you can have your dogs free but not mix with other people's dogs. Pit Bulls don't always get along with other dogs, but do we always get along with other people? No. That doesn't have to mean we're bad.

for fun's sake, which one is the American Pit Bull Terrier?
