Your Top 10 Albums

Postby WildSimba » December 8th, 2011, 10:47 pm

I know there's a favorite albums thread, but this thread is for your top 10 favorite albums. I'm just curious as to what some people's are on here. It'd be cool if you gave a reasoning behind it as well.

1. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel: This album absolutely amazes me. It's the one album that I can listen to over and over again and never get bored of. it just reaches me on such a personal level.
2. Good News for People Who Love Bad News - Modest Mouse: An amazing album. Truely a classic album for Modest Mouse, as well as the album that got me into the band.
3. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West: Just... wow. Kanye West really outdid himself with this record. Some of the guest stars on this album sound better to me then they have anywhere else.
4. The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory - Makaveli (2pac): A truely flawless rap album. It's a totally great album from beginning to end, and really has a lot of meaning.
5. Regulate... G Funk Era - Warren G: This album is absolutely amazing. I love his style of music, and Warren G really knew how to mix tough subjects with really great and light-hearted instrumentals.
6. The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails: The first time I heard this album, I pretty much hated it. To this day I still am not really sure why I like it so much, but to me it's a really amazing album. It's insanely hard, but the light accoustic moments to it are really the highlights for me.
7. It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa - Eazy-E: A really good rap record. Though it's pretty short, it's gets it's message out there, and that's really why I love it so much.
8. Sams Town - The Killers: This album is really insane! I love it so much. The vocals, lyrics, instrumentals, everything about it really gets to me.
9. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd: Do I really have to say anything about this one? It's a really amazing album.
10. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys: An insanely good indie record, and also possibly one of my favorite indie albums. It just from beginning to end really strikes a chill down my spine, and that's why I love it.

10. Odessey and Oracle: The Zombies- An album that usually gets overlooked by casual fans. Great album from start to finish. Top songs: Care of Cell 44, A Rose for Emily, Changes, This Will be Our Year, Butchers Tale (Western Front 1914), Friends of Mine. My favorite: Time of the Season
9. Led Zeppelin IV: Led Zeppelin-As you can tell, the band's fourth album. Very mystical feel. Top songs: Black dog, Rock and Roll, The Battle of Evermore, Misty Mountain Hop, When the Levee Breaks. My fav: Stairway to Heaven
8. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: Elton John-One of the quintessential soft rock albums of all time. Elton at his best. Top songs: Funeral for a Friend/Love lies bleeding, Harmony, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, All the Young Girls Love Alice, Candle in the Wind, Grey Seal, Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting. My fav: Bennie and the Jets
7. Ram: Paul McCartney-Paul's second solo album and one very underlooked when it comes to all time best records. Paul is a tour de force here. Top songs: Too many People, Dear Boy, Heart of the Country, The Back Seat of my Car, Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey. My fav: Long Haired Lady
6. Dark Side of the Moon: Pink Floyd- SOOOOOOO calming. Not just a druggie album. Top songs: Speak to me/Breathe, Us and Them, Great Gig in the Sky, Money, Any Colour you like. My fav: Time
5. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: Beatles-It's overplayed but still a revolutionary album. Top songs: Sgt. Pepper, With a Little Help from my Friends, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Within You Without You. My fav: A Day in the Life.
4. Revolver: Beatles-Some say this is the greatest album of all time. While it's a classic, I disagree. Still amazing. Top songs: Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, I'm Only Sleeping, Here There and Everywhere, Yellow Submarine, Got To Get You Into My Life. My fav: Tomorrow Never Knows
3. White Album: The Beatles-To me, this is the greatest Beatles album of all time. The band is falling apart and what we get are some AMAZING "solo" efforts. Top songs: Nearly all of them. My fav: Helter Skelter
2. Pet Sounds: Beach Boys-If you want an album that you can listen through all the way, this is it. This is the album that made pop big. Top songs: Everything. My fav: God Only Knows
1. The SMiLE Sessions: Beach Boys-It's not a completed album but nothing, NOTHING beats SMiLE. This would've knocked the socks off of people. Dennis Wilson was right "It's gonna make Pet Sounds stink" Top songs: Our Prayer, Heroes and Villains, Wonderful, Cabin Essence, Child is Father of the Man, Vega-Tables, Wind Chimes, The Elements: Fire, Love to Say Da-Da, Good Vibrations. My fav: Surf's Up is one of the greatest songs every made.

I'm ok with saying Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the band's escense for their funk-alternative style, but just dunno, I've always like more Californication, for me, was a good change on this album. Also, it was the first album I heard from them, and californication was one of the first songs that drew me to the music. So it's ok if you want to say is not their best album, but I think it is tho, imo.

Whoa, took me a while to write this :P since I barely love albums much, oh well, here we go...

- 1. Phobia - Breaking Benjamin: I just love it, it has wonderful tracks, especially Diary of Jane.
Favorite Song: eh, I can't choose between, Diary of Jane, Breath and Evil Angel
- 2. Until We Have Faces - RED: Very nice band, Christian-ish, rock metal band, simply love them, and they do a good job at writing their songs.
Favorite song would be: Not Alone
- 3. The Unforgiving - Within Temptation: Very nice songs, but a minus to it that they don't have anymore the wonderful metal and symphonic music, but still, worth listening if you love female vocals and rock.
Favorite Song: Shot in the Dark
- 4. The Well - Casting Crowns: Very peaceful Christian music, simply full of Christian stuff, which I like.
Favorite Song: Jesus Friend of Sinners
- 5. The Days of Grays - Sonata Arctica (Bonus Disc Orchestra CD): Thank-you very much to Kops, lol. Naaaw, I was just curious what genre and stuff are Sonata Arctica after I kept seeing Kops' posts in the "What song are you listening to?" thread. Soo my curiosity lead me to youtube and listen to some of their songs. Loved it, and so I did fell in love with this album.
Favorite Song: Flag In The Ground (Orchestra Version)
- 6. The Silent Force - Within Temptation: Another great CD, nothing more :B
Favorite Song: Angels or Memories (depends)
- 7. Dear Agony - Breaking Benjamin: Well, another good album from BB, I really fell in love with their songs, they just re too amazing for me ears, lol.
Favorite song: I Will Not Bow or Dear Agony
- 8. An Acoustic Night At The Theatre - Within Temptation: Mostly great Acoustic songs from their best singles, and the only album which has Utopia (feat. Chris Jones) I really love the songs in the acoustic, mostly their singles are acoustic version.
Favorite song: Utopia (feat. Chris Jones)
- 9. Dark Passion Play - Nightwish: Pretty much the same as WT, but I love them as well.
Favorite Song: Seven Days to the Wolves
- 10. Evanescence - Evanescence (Deluxe): A great album, I don't have anything to say anymore. =P
Favorite song: What You Want

Let's see how many people I tick off with my music choices. inb4 YOU HAVE NO TASTE IN MUSIC :P

10. Inside Job - Don Henley It doesn't have my favorite song on it, but still, it's really good.
9. Sawdust - The Killers A friend at school showed me this a long time ago and I really like it still.
8. Picture Perfect Morning - Edie Brickell The first album I ever listened to and it's still one of my favorites to this day.
7. Repeat the Sounding Joy - Phillips, Dean, and Craig Christmas album that's become a holiday tradition in my favorite.
6. Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus - Roxette So many good songs on this one =)
5. 21 - Adele A fan because of my sister, but Jose convinced it was "epic", so much so that I decided to buy it.
4. What A Feelin' - Irena Cara The studio album for the movie Flashdance. Really epic imho
3. Private Eyes - Hall and Oates These two are the reason I am into pop so much. *stops talking before people groan*
2. Best Shots - Pat Benatar A great album, with a great cover art to match =)
1. Look Sharp - Roxette Epic album is epic. I remember when I found it in my mom's CD collection and instantly fell in love. How much do I like it? I ordered a cassette tape version just so I could play it in my old car (no CD player >.<)

Honorable mention: Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Since this is Jose's favorite, I had to listen to the whole thing, but I didn't want to include it because it would look like I was just copying him. lol. Regardless, I loved it very much =D

10. Automatic for the people - REM. Very versatile. Great pop songs like Try not to breathe, rock songs like Monty got a raw deal and dreamy songs like Star me Kitten. Favorite: Find the river. Always makes me relax.

9. Abbey Road - Beatles. At that time the band members weren`t exactly good friends, but they cooperated and were relaxed because they had agreed this would be their final album. And what a finale. George really shines through here since his contributions are just as great as Lennon/McCartney`s. I absolutely love the medleys that start with Mean Mr. Mustard. Favorite: You never give me your money. Paul`s most underrated song, almost a medley in itself.

8. The Dark Side Of the Moon - Pink Floyd. I saw a documentary about this album, and Roger Waters said that before they released it, they listened through the entire album, and they had never felt so proud afterwards. I would be proud too had I made something like this. When you listen to the long intro of Time, it builds up your anticipation and you know something great is gonna come, and the song doesn`t disappoint. Awesome guitar solo in the middle. Favorite: Us and them.

7. Bryter Layter - Nick Drake. Nick Drake was a genius, he only made 3 albums but there`s not one mediocre track on any of the albums. His voice isn`t all that great, but it fits perfectly with his compositions. Just listen to songs like Hazey Jane and Nothern sky and you will be taken away to a dream world. Favorite: Fly. So insanely beautiful and melancholic.

6. Graceland - Paul Simon. The undisputable highlight of Simon`s solo career. I love the singers on I know what I know. I love the short but extremely groovy bass solo on You can call me Al. I love the duet on Under African Skies, I love everything about this album. Favorite: Diamonds on the soles of her shoes.

5. At first sight - The Stems. It`s a disgrace that this album isn`t more known about. Is crammed with catchy tunes, the singer has a voice that suits the songs perfectly, their lyrics are mostly about love. Not one weak track, not a versatile album but the songs are so good that it doesn`t matter. Favorite: For always.

4. OK Computer - Radiohead. It took me a while to digest this album, but it sounded so intriguing that I know something big would open up for me, and boy did it. Unfortunately the tracks 7, 8 and 9 in my eyes are significantly weaker then the rest, 7 can hardly be called music. But the album more than salvages itself with the last 3 tracks that I view as 3 of the greatest songs of the 90`s. An extremely strong finale on this album, and the first six tracks are also great which makes this my favorite album from the 90`s. Favorite: Lucky.

3. Blood on the tracks - Bob Dylan. Some of Bob Dylan`s songs that critics view as awesome are in my eyes boring, but when Dylan does succeed, hardly anything sounds more beautiful. On Idiot Wind Dylan sings with an extreme intensity, and on If you see her, say hello his voice is screaming out heartbreak. But the two standout tracks for me are Tangled up in blue and Shelter from the storm, which I call super tracks because those two are in among my top 10 songs of all time. Shelter from the storm does more than any other song take me to a different place, and Tangled up in blue is some of the greatest storytelling you will ever hear. Favorite: Tangled up in blue.

2. Skylarking - XTC. During last year`s summer I intently listened to this album, and when I was to place it on my top 25 album list, I found no reason why this shouldn`t be nr. 2. It`s a long album with 15 tracks, so that`s even more impressive when you can press 15 great songs into an album. I was also lucky listening to it during the summer, because this is the definitive summer album. Also a very versatile album, never feels repetitive. Favorite: Big day.

1. The Stone Roses - Stone Roses. Still as close as I can come to a flawless album. Even though I praise the last 3 tracks on OK Cumputer, the last 3 tracks here are still actually stronger, and they`re not even among my favorites on this album. Strictly consists of immortal songs, has jawdropping guitar playing, all in all as good as it gets. Nothing more to say, really. Favorite: Waterfall.

By the way, this summer in Oslo Paul Simon will play the entire Graceland album in concert, and Stone Roses will play at a festival. Could it BE any better?
