Why did the kingdom fall to pieces under scar?

The pride lands is not Africa as a whole, its a rather small area, so Hyenas/Lions would I assume travel some great distance out of the pride lands to hunt if it came to it, but Scar refused indivudals to leave so they were all stuck in the small space they had to hunt.

Just a small distance away, Simba was living in a lush jungle. So yes, Scar did not allow anyone to leave the Pridelands, so that he can keep an eye on them, and therefore it was only the Pridelands that suffered.

Also, the herds left the drought and over-hunting. If Scar did not limit the hunts to just the Pridelands, the herds would not have had any place to run away to. Also, Scar would have been much more open about leaving Priderock if he didn't care about the borders.

It could be either symbolism or Scar was literally a bad king. Too much population (lions/way too many heyenas), not enough food.
