Could a Lioness rule the Pridelands?

It IS kind of unrealistic, there were-what-over a hundered hyensa? They would not have been dropping off Pride Rock likes fleas as portrayed in the movie. With Simba's 9-12 lioness VS. oodles of hyenas the realistic scenario is Simba and his pride falling. Which probably WOULD have happened if Scar hadn't placed the blame on the hyenas. Anways: I'm guessing they were feeling to defeated to fight; the kings were dead, the land is destroyed, and none of them are of royal blood. That's my best guess though.

They could have also needed an outsider male for a physiological reason: the lionesses were slowly getting weaker (keep in mind that the hyenas are too weakening through starvation), but just by themselves, the lionesses themselves are nothing more than desperate Pride members who don't like their king.

On the other hand, by getting a rogue in (in this case Simba), the lionesses are saying: Look, Scar. We've had enough. And we mean it. We defied all your laws and that means that the punishment is death. But we don't care becasue we are serious about replacing you. Yes, we disobeyed your laws, but we don't care, Scar. You are going out.

A rouge lion is, along with another lion to help them, a sign of dissent that even Scar can't ignore.

Many of the Hyenas ran rather than fought after The Lionesses joined the battle (The scene right after Rafiki's martial arts fight against the Hyenas) I believe it was because they felt over-matched against Simba and The Lionesses. (and as was already mentioned Timon, Pumbaa, and Rafiki were in the battle too.)

I'll say no, as far I know there's a kind of ''ruler'' on the prides for protect all lionesses and cubs from other male lions, 'cause they're stronger and better capacited to fight against rouges.. So i'd say it would be better if there were a male lion as a king, is more ''secure'' for well being of the pride to have a sort of protector, so yeah, a lioness couldn't rule by herself.
