Melony managed a slight smile and, after a rather long hesitation, leaned closer to Jempa and gave him a short nuzzle.

Jempa returned the nuzzle. "Come on. Let's go back," he said.

Melony smiled and wagged her tail as Jempa returned her nuzzle. It was the greatest feeling she ever experienced in her entire life. "Okay." she said happily.

They returned to the area around their musher's tent. Everything at the checkpoint was falling silent as the mushers finished their dinner and began to get ready for bed. Hammy sighed contentedly. "I can't wait to tell my parents and grandparents about all of this," he said. He then thought about for a moment. "And when we return to Nome in triumph, I'm not going to get a big head like that idiot Steele," he said.

Melony was looking at Jempa with a smile the entire way back to their area. When they arrived there, she waited for him to lie down before laying down beside him. She stared into his eyes for a few moments before nuzzling him and resting her head in his warm fur.

Before long, it was dark, and the entire camp had fallen silent, save for a couple of sentries who stayed out to watch for bears. The night passed and the sun rose again. Again, Rusty Knife checkpoint was in a flurry of activity as mushers prepared their teams. Hammy and his teammates were put into their harnesses and attached to the sled. Hammy looked at his friends. "Are you guys ready?" he said.

Melony nodded, before walking over to Jempa. "Good luck." she said, smiling and licking his cheek before getting back to her spot inline.

Jempa licked her back. "Do well," he said. For a brief moment, Hammy looked at Lilly to make sure she was all right. Satisfied that she was, he looked forward, waiting for the musher's command.

Melony's tail wagged and she felt as if her cheeks were burning. After getting back to her spot she focused on what was happening and waited for the musher's command as did the others.

The musher took his place. "Mush!" he shouted. Hammy took off running. For the longest time, they ran, stopping at the checkpoints at night to rest. Finally, however, they arrived at their destination, the town of Tolketna. The mushers brought their teams to a stop. Hammy looked at the devastation caused by the blizzard. "Look how bad it is," he said to Lilly, Samson, Jempa and Melony.
