Another thing to consider, is that Kovu glances at Simba a second before Simba jumps to save Kiara. If Simba had not went after Kiara, Kovu definitely would have. If Simba and Kovu had jumped simultaneously they might have knocked each other off the cliff.

As for Simba's nightmare it illustrated Simba's mistrust of Scar being transferred to Kovu.

That would have worked, too. If either one of those scenes we mentioned here were in the final film, it would have been powerful, and showed Kovu's redemption through Simba's eyes.

But, I think I still want the "relative in danger" factor in the scenario as everything in Simba's nightmare should have been mirrored in the climatic cliff scene. From Simba's family member in danger to Simba struggling to save them to Kovu taking some role in it.
