It wasn't really specified how long the shortage of food was going on for though. Scar seemed like a very impatient king, so perhaps maybe even just a day without food would make him that irritable. There had to have been at least enough food to keep the pride functioning physically, but just not enough to satisfy His Royal Highness and the countless hyenas. It would take a while for the pride to become skinny and emaciated, and the fact that at least Sarabi was trying to plead with Scar to move the pride, hinted that there was still enough time to save things before they really began to starve.

Disney went extreme enough with killing off Mufasa. They don't want to scar children for life by drawing skeletal lions (even if they could). It's easier to draw healthy lions than those with bones poking through the skin and all that nasty stuff. But if you want a more "real" explanation:

What about biology? When there is less food, a body automatically adjusts its metabolism to compensate for the lack of intake. It's a temporary measure at best, but it can still explain why the lions don't look skinny if the drought is only in the beginning of its severe stage.

True, true. I could see why Disney wouldn't do that.

Oh well if I ever made a new Lion King movie I'd make that part more dramatic to put more depth into the movie. Then again they would have to make the movie PG-13?
