I was browsing the "Post your Desktop" topic, and I was interested to see which operating systems people were using. Feel free to reply which which specific version you have and if you like it or don't like it, along with any pros/cons.
For example, here's mine:
Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal
I love it! Well, mostly.
Pros:
It's free!
Much lighter than Windows - can run applications better
Multiple settings - GNOME or Unity - performance or ease of use, respectively.
Upgrades - New releases every 6 months. Minor upgrades/updates every few days.
Open source - lots of software is free. And you can change it if you want to.
Virus free- As a form of Linux, and about 4% of the OS market (easily less), no one writes viruses for Linux.
Cons:
Unity is resource heavy - I don't use it because my applications lag under Unity.
Software compatibility issues - It's not Windows or Mac. Expect things you get not to run.
New resource-hogging settings. I like those better, but I can't use them because of the drain on the system.
You need to know your code to get things done
You can easily botcher up the entire OS - be prepared to re-install.
Overall impressions (OPINION) - If you are computer-literate and don't mind getting mad at your machine, Linux is a great OS. It's much better than Windows, and is much cheaper than Mac OS X. I think that it's the Number 1 Operating System, but it's still far from perfect. In order to utilize it the best way for my usage, I need a more powerful computer. Some major upgrades tend to need some getting used to, but are great overall. I already had to re-install the operating system from scratch a few times, but I keep things backed up in a second hard-drive, so sometimes I do it if I simply feel like it. But in the end, I love it!
