Besides, Scar is a bit like a stereotypical nerd in the lion world.
* calm rage * I like going with Scar saying that they (the lionesses) couldn't imagine what huge of a mess the stampede was and Simba wouldn't have been able to survive anyway. Just told them he searched the whole length of the gorge but didn't find his body.

Scar's a good liar, he would have really pulled it off someway.

I think it was more of a "heat of the moment" kind of thing. Knowing it's possible they had already seen the body of Mufasa, if the guy who "witnessed" his death says he saw another person die at the scene, people are going to take his word just for the simple fact that there was already good enough evidence at the moment that the first person had died. Then beyond that, I think how fast Scar came in with the Hyena's would of meant that it would of been hard to investigate any further, especially considering he was making them hunt for their own food.

Maybe the lionesses didn`t go to the gorge to actually look at the bodies of Mufasa and Simba?
It seems to me that the pride just took Scar`s word for it, without actually checking for themselves if what he said was true.
He could of said something like, "Simba was crushed under Mufasa's body." Because obviously no one in the pride could lift Mufasa up. I know sounds stupid but what ever just an idea.
I definitely agree

There was also a clear lapse in time, from the point of the stampede, which seemed like it happened about mid-day or so, to the point when Scar is telling the pride about Mufasa and Simba's death, which is at night. Thus, Scar had a little time to think up whatever excuse he told the rest of the pride. This lapse in time also gives the scavengers within the lands, plenty of time to strip a corpse clean, or in a lion cub's case, devour it completely. I also agree with the point that none of the pride had any reason to believe that Scar would make up something like this.

Add the fact that Simba liked Scar as a cub. I would assume that the other lionesses would take the friendship as mutual: Simba likes Scar, therefore Scar likes Simba. All the more reason why not to doubt his word.

On a very minor point, for humans, the concept of "death only when the body is found" is rather new: only when finding bodies became easy enough to do regularly. For much of our history, no body meant death. I would assume that it would be the same with the lions.

Death is one of those complexities in nature, that is really hard to understand. Some creatures seem to mourne the loss of their kind more than others, although it would be wrong to assume that not all creatures take death lightly. I've seen a lioness carry around her dead cub for quite some time, as if she just couldn't accept the fact that he was dead, and didn't want to let him go. It's quite moving actually, but in the case of TLK, it's difficult whether to think that these anthropomorphic characters would act as humans would, or as a pride of lions would.

I don't think he needed to. Mufasa - a full grown, wise lion who knows what he's doing - died in a stampede. It is highly likely the tiny, noy yet so wise and level-headed cub did too. They likely assumed the stampede at least wounded Simba who then was an easy prey for hyenas and such. The odds were against Simba's survival, especially with Zazu confirming the highly critical situation he last saw before he got knocked out.

Very true, it never dawned on me that Zazu would have been able to corroborate most of Scar's story.
