I don't want to wait for Halo Anniversary...

Postby DGFone » June 21st, 2011, 2:38 am

My inner PC-gamer took over here, so if you are not interested, you may leave. If your username is SimbaGamer, then you must read this. :P

So therefore, I decided to download it for free, 100% legally.

If this sounds to good to be true, it's because in a way, it is. In a way. 343 is developing an HD remake as I type this up, but I don' want to wait until Nov 15th. I am only willing to wait for another 10 minutes. This also happens to be the time left for my downloads to finish. (10 of them)

Okay, fine. I am kinda trolling here. (One member specifically. Yes, you SimbaGamer 8-) ) This is because I am using the PC version of Halo CE (which is also ported for the mac) and am able to download mods for it. Specifically, graphical updates.

So if you are a fan of Halo, have a PC or mac copy of Halo 1 lying around, why not try out some of the mods that are out there?

*Waits patiently for SimbaGamer's anti-PC gaming comment/image/video or other such thing*

Failed your PC gaming course, did you now?

JK, I understand the appeal for console gaming. Yes, in my opinion, consoles are bad, but that's just me.

So I tried playing the first level. It's: awesome! But it's not 100% perfect. There is a severe separation in the aging of models. For the most part, everything looks better. And the team that made the mod knew what they were doing: the assault rifle is replaced with the Halo 3 version, not the much worse looking Halo Reach model. The map, for the most part, is identical apart from sharper textures. But I was delighted to find out that a new section (an extra corridor) not in the original game, complete with it's own tag: A whole new world.

The worst part is the severe lack of optimization: brutes, which were added, bleed way too much, causing a very noticeable FPS drop.

This is a beta release, and a splendid one at that, and I will most likely send a critique when I am done with the campaign. What better way to get the best game then to aid in the development?

Also, I would imagine that once Halo Anniversary would come out, a lot of it's objects would be used in Halo PC mods, almost neglecting a need to make a Halo PC re-release. If that would happen, the only real difference would be that the Halo PC mods would use the Halo 1 engine, while the remake would use the Halo Reach engine. And if you care to know, the Reach engine is a heavily modified Halo 3 engine, which is at core the Halo 1 engine. So if Reach can do it, Halo PC can, in one form or another.

Well, about the trolling: I wasn't trying, so failure is expected.

Now the mode/remake: When they said "A whole new world", they meant it! The first level is now about 3 times as long, and I have yet to complete level 2. In the vanilla campaign I would be half-way done with the game by now. It's awesome, but very long. The levels are HUGE.

All the more glory for us PC gamers. :)

Not really. My family's TV is excellent, but has a half second input delay. And I will never get used to a controller. The input methods are too crude for me. I like precision. :)

Not to mention you can buy a controller to use with games on the PC. Typically, games on the PC have an option to use a 360 controller. Also, games look better on the PC, no offense, but the consoles are just a cheaper qualitied version of a game that was originally meant to be played on a PC. The only good things about consoles over PC's is that their more convieniet for the causal gamer. But PC games are good if your not afriad of going an extra step. Actually, PC games are usually cheaper then console games, by the way. So your paying less, and getting a game that's better quality depending on how your PC runs.

And saying the games are cheaper so that people who can't afford a console is bullcrap, because the games are MADE ON and originally desined to play the best on a PC. u mad consolefags?

Considering a top end gaming PC costs more and is capable of more than even the PS3, I woud hardly say a PC gamer could not afford a console lol.
I aint even mad, I am just a relatively casual gamer and so like the ease of consoles. Not to mention I only really need one gaming system.

A PC can emulate other consoles, but that's not a major impact against them. My biggest issue with consoles is that they don't have any CPU to speak of. The PS3, the most powerful of the current-gen consoles, only reserves 11% of its thinking power to a CPU. When done right, consoles can draw. But they can't think. And when I like CPU intensive games like X-Plane 9, consoles are a no go.

A PC is even better for casual games in that you can jump in and out of them much quicker than consoles, which require a free TV, and you need to turn on the TV, console, put the game in... PCs just turn the game on, play a little, quit, and go back to work. (A game called DEFCON even has an office-mode, which runs in the background as you work)

Now many PC games cost $60 when new. This is because consoles did it first. And why did consoles do that? Because when you buy an Xbox for $300, Microsoft loses money that it regains through game sails. Same with the PS3. PCs and the Wii are the only systems that make money on the hardware, which is why games that are made solely for those systems are much cheaper. Starcraft 2 when it came out cost $50. That's the highest you will see for PC only titles.

And for people who say that getting a gaming rig is expensive: Unlike consoles, PC hardware gets cheaper over time. It is true that getting the latest hardware is expensive, but if yo wait a year or two, or simply settle for something that's a bit weaker, it's easy to be on a budget. My rig, which is far from being the best, but is still decent, only costs $300 in parts. This is the cost of an Xbox, but my system is more powerful.

It really comes down to preferences in the end. I am completely biased towards PCs.

I would also like to congratulate you guys. I don't see any flames yet. Better than on other forums. :)
