Vitani said, "My pride and your father's pride were rivals... My mother hated your grandfather... She was never a good mother to me and she didn't approve of me seeing your father..."

Vitani smiled for this was a more pleasant part of her story, "I ran away so that I could see him. He was the only friend I've ever had. Your grandfather wasn't the bad and evil lion that my mother described him to be, he allowed me into the pride."
