Oh yeah I heard about that, it is known as the rapture and without getting too complicated, it is more or less the day of Jesus 2nd coming, where we shall all be judged and then those who are non believers are going to die some kind of horrible death from then until some date and those who are believers will be sent to the kingdom of heaven for eternal peace.
But here is the thing, that kind of view is only initiated from religious extremists, you can in fact be a Christian and still choose not to believe in that side of it, just like any other religion. But the way they spread the word of it is to get people aware of it so they can join them and yada yada.
But you know what is perplexing, in 1994 this guy predicted it would be in September of that year right, and guess what, it did not happen. After September passed he changed his prediction to May 21 2011 (this Saturday) so all I can say is that it is unlikely. The date of the rapture has been predicted a lot of times ever sine 1844, and not once happened.
But yeah even if it does happen on that day (I do not believe it will to clarify) the world would not end on that day, I can not really explain why not, think of it like a purge on Earth, like how the members here are banned if they misbehave kind of thing. It is an interesting discussion though, if nothing else.
NOW for something that scientifically can happen and destroy the world in 2036, a giant asteroid named 99942 Apophis has a 1 in 250,000 chance of colliding with Earth in... I believe it is April 2036... Might seem like a small number but statistically is a lot higher than winning the lottery, or being hit by lightning. In fact it is a lot more likely to happen than a lot of other things.
