Yeah..I mean in the Outlands they all had to fight for their survival. Maybe she got into a fight with another outlander or a rogue. Or with a pridelander/Simba. The possibilities are endless.

I always thought it was likely gotten in a fight.

Simba gave her that when she refused to leave the pridelands.
There was a fight about it and simba grasps onto her ear with his teeth and ripped it off.

I read a comic by Annie on TLKFAA, and it was based on something like this:
Zira had returned to the pridelands to plead to Simba to reconsider since her cubs could not survive in the Outlands.
Nala came out of the den and noticed Zira was here, and remembered her past: Zira was a bully to her during Scar's reign.
Suddenly Nala got all ninja like and attacked Zira, biting her ear and turning her around, which made her rip the chunk off.
Nala layed on the ground angrily.
Zira got up with the ear hole and said: "Oh your good...but not good enough."
COMIC ENDS.
I like believing this theory, it makes sense why they despised each other so much in that SP scene.

Well, Arro, I like that idea.
I think that Annie's idea makes a bit more sense though. It's in this comic of hers that I find really interesting. I like the idea that Nala and Zira got into a fight where the ear on Zira was torn. It also explains Nala's eye color :]
