Simba ran into the gorge, coughing as he charged into the dust kicked up by the last few wildebeest. "Dad!" he yelled, his eyes wide with terror as he searched for his father. "Dad!"

And then he saw it, the mass of lion laying at the bottom of the gorge. His eyes widened, swallowing hard as he ran up to his father. "Dad? Dad c'mon, you gotta get up." He said, rubbing up against his father. "Dad, we gotta go home..."

Wining and nudging his father, Simba crawled under his limp paw. Then he felt it, the hot breath coming from his fathers nose. With a groan the large lion moved his head.

His eyes opened, though his face was badly bruised, and as he opened his mouth to speak blood trickled down his chin. "Simba?" He asked, coughing up dust and blood.

"Dad!" He said, a grin appearing on his face. "I thought I'd lost you."

But the look Mufasa gave him made his frown fade... The king was dying. "Listen to me Simba... Scar did this to me.." He said, his deep majestic voice weakened from his injuries. "He will come soon, I am sure... You must run. Run away, fast, back to the pride."

"But dad! I can't leave you." He said, tears forming in his eyes.

"The sun is setting on me, Simba." He said softly, holding his son close. "And you must be safe to rule in my stead. I love you my son..."

Simba nodded, choking back tears. "I love you too dad." he said softly.

"Promise me you will run." Mufasa said, his eyes closing as his life began to fade.

Simba nodded, tears streaking down his golden fur. "I promise." He said softly.

And with that, the king took his last breath, and Simba watched the life leave his eyes. He wept for his father for a while, that was until he heard the echos of paws approaching from farther along the gorge. He suddenly remembered what his father had said, and ran away as fast as he could, tears falling in his wake, back towards Pride Rock.
