It's rather obvious that the title isn't reffering to just one character, since the "lion king" changes almost every new generation in the TLK universe.
That is true, but I personally think the movie title refers to Simba because he was the rightful heir to the throne, and he becomes the Lion King at the end of the movie. Mufasa died quite early in the story, and Scar took the throne by force, he was never supposed to be king.
So in my head it seems logical that because the movie and the whole TLK universe is centered around SIMBA, the title refers to him. The movie begins with his birth and ends with him assuming the throne.. so yeah, Simba is The Lion King.


ok...and I think you're taking this a little too seriously. I agree that Simba is the king; but I don't think the title itself is referring to Simba - at least in the first movie, the second I believe it is, since it is called Simba's Pride. But if it was only about Simba being king then there wouldn't be any other characters. It's about who ever is represented as king. The movie itself is about being king and that there are lions.
