I honestly kinda laughed at that moment with the dramatic fall into the water. xD Just don't take it seriously, I don't take TLK and SP seriously which is why I can enjoy this movie. Sure, Mufasa's death was sad, but fortunately it's a movie, no harm was done to any lion king named Mufasa. :3

And besides, no one fictional can die. If you want to see him alive just go to the beginning of the movie!

I took Timon and Pumbaa being in the gorge offensively because they mock everything, therefore, mocking Mufasa's death and the whole Stampede Scene (which is my favorite seen, btw).
