I think the wildebeasts killed Mufasa because they would have trampled him to death.

Agreed. It was probably a kick to the head that shattered his skull or more likely a kick to the chest that splintered his ribs that pierced his heart since there was no bleeding.

But then again, anything could have killed him in the stampede (I mean any type of injury, the wildebeest killed him) since it was a Disney movie and there wasn't going to be any blood anyway.
