I would have liked to see the cut scene actually be part of the film. Though it might have given the little kids a nightmare

Geez! I knew that Zira was weird, but I didn't know she was THAT weird. That pic gave me the creeps!

I know, right? It gave my little sister a nightmare. I laughed, but then I stared at it linger and it started to freak me out a little.

I just think she realised there was nothing left on earth for her, so she wanted to join the other lions in the stars and be with Scar again. Scar was gone, as was Nuka and her other cubs had left her, not to mention her pride sisters left too. I think she must have felt there was no way out as she slid further down the cliff and gave up. The smile? I figured she realised that there might be pain, but then it'd all be over. Her life of poverty and hurting would finally be over!
Morbid, I know, but these things happen.

Yeah. I'm not surprised, as you've said, she simply had nothing left on Earth for her. So she gave up.
