Toy Story 3 Vs. HTTYD

With Oscar season rolling around, which one of these two giants would you pick?

For me, as it is with a lot of people, it's a matter of personal preference. Having seen them both (although obvious I'm an HTTYD fan... *notes signature and fanfics*) I can honestly say they're both outstanding films that I wish had been released in different years so they could both win.

I like them for different reasons. Toy Story three was definitely the funnier of the two in my opinion. It's not that HTTYD wasn't funny, it has its moments, but Toy Story clearly focused more on incorporating jokes and humor into the script. Toy Story also reunited us with the icons of our childhood, Woody and Buddy, and they were in fine, no, excellent form throughout the movie. It was very well written, voice acting was superb and animation was just about flawless. The story was touching and moving (if a bit melancholy for my tastes) and the theme of growing up but remembering the good times couldn't be more relevant to a kid at a boarding high school going to college in the future. Also, TS3 wasn't, in my opinion, a kid's movie. This gave it some leeway to cut out parts of the script that a 'kid's movie' needs to appeal to its audience. Its greatest weakness in my opinion was the long drawn out epilogue; I sort of felt like there were 20 extra minutes of tearjerking added onto the end, so much that I was nearly numb when the credits popped up.

I thought HTTYD was a different beast (no pun intended). Its greatest weakness in my opinion was that it was billed as a 'kid's movie'. There are characters that are unabashedly one-dimensional, (irritating stud, nerdy kid, bickering twins, etc) and there are jokes and parts of the script that are cheesy or childish simply because they had to be present to appeal to that audience. Beyond that, I thought Toothless and Hiccup were deep characters that I quickly gave a damn about and genuinely worried about. The themes of going against society, prejudice, friendship, and, at the very end, the consequences of war couldn't have been more mature. The score was (no offense to Randy Newman fans) on a whole different plane than TS3 and I believe is up for best score. The script was brilliant with a number of subtle parallels if you look for them, and the animation was superb.

So two great movies! TS3 will win the Oscar because it's Pixar and because it's Toy Story. But what do you guys think? :3

I will never get why people say "In my opinion" it is not like I clicked the thread thinking you were giving someone else's. Anywayyyy...
Maybe it is because I grew up with the films, and I like the nostalgia of the film but really, if toy story 3 does win it then I think it deserves it over HTTYD.
I have seen both and I think Toy Story 3 wins, the story is better, I found HTTYD good in that aspect too but just a bit too predictable the whole time.
I do agree with what you are saying about the score though, it is rather fantastic!

As for what you said about the epilogue being drawn out in Toy Story 3, he had to give them away (spoilers bla bla the films been out a while now) I would agree but, it was needed to some degree, because it was closure (presume it was the last TS film) so if that did not happen then it would not have been as special a film I think.
And yeah Toy Story three was funnier, and that to me makes it more entertaining to watch and thus the better film of the two. HTTYD tries to hard to just tell a story that it just feels quite bland, what I will say is that if best animation is focused solely on which film had the better animation, pffft HTTYD wins hands down because some of the scenes were really beautiful. But as a film, Toy Stoweeee :D

Because otherwise it's saying you think that's the end of the argument, I.E. Toy Story is the best movie ever sounds like I think everyone should think that and that's the bottom line, end of the story. In my opinion just kinda reiterates that it's just my opinion and not a 'fact', if you will. ^^

I am absolutely astounded by Pixar's magnificent achievment. Even my parents and classmates said it was an amazing film. It's so heart-drenchingly delightful and of course, beautifully animated!

They're both great, but if I have to choose... I'm sorry, Pixar, I really am, but How To Train Your Dragon is without a doubt my favourite film of last year. (Tangled doesn't really count as in most of the world it wasn't released in 2010 xP.)

I... I never thought I'd see the day when I'd pick a Dreamworks film over a Pixar production 0_0

Toy Story 3: I really fell in love with this film. Tom Hanks is my favorite actor and he plays a brilliant role in it as Woody, our favorite, stubborn, cowboy doll. Woody has always been my favorite character because he shows great loyalty and leadership to the group (And good sense!). He reminds me of myself, although I'm not a real leader. Getting back to the story, the animation was amazing (What can you expect from a Pixar film?), plot was interesting, villian was interesting as well, but two things really struck out at me. For one, the movie in general wasn't much of a kids film. It was more centered toward the adults in the audience who remember the fond memories of their earlier childhood days when they saw the films. (Or just earlier years) It only had some humor in it to please the cubbies. The thing that hurt me most, however, was that this film was extremely personal to me. I'm an odd child and I get attached to whoever/whatever I love. For instance, I could never part from my Nala plush because she has sentimental value to me. The part that hurt my heart the strongest was when the little girl sees Woody and tries to take it from Andy. The look in Andy's eyes are just telling her, "This is my best friend. You can't have him because I love him." Whereas the little girl looks at Andy curiously because she's a child and doesn't understand how much he means to him. I feel it would have taken much courage to give the little girl his best friend because he cared. <3

How to Train Your Dragon: To begin with, this movie didn't touch my heart as Toy Story 3 did, but it was an amazing movie none-the-less. The actors were brilliant, animation the best of Dreamworks I've ever seen, the actions, the script, in general, I loved it. I agree with Az, though, it was centered more towards kids at some scenes. I feel that it was meant more to adults (As with Toy Story), but with some cheesy comical humor slashed in it to appease the children. Some humor was genuinly funny, however (Especially the scenes featuring Hiccup and Toothless). The Hiccup/Toothless relationship was stunning as well as they both realized there was no difference between them and that friendship can never be broken. They share a bond that was very powerful. The score, as Az also said, was very brilliant, and I must admit it was better than Toy Story 3. After seeing the same style from Dreamworks, it was very refreshing to see some real animation. As you might have known, Dreamworks has this "style" for making the characters seem as realistic as possible. Whereas in this film, it balances it out to make it stylish but realistic. All in all, this film was stunning and was an instant favorite for me. I <3 Jay Baruchel, too. ^^

These films both have their weaknesses and strengths, so I will remain neutral on the subject because they both hit me emotionally and are an instant favorites of mine. <3

I would pick TS3 any day. Not to insult HTTYD but honestly... it seemed like a tear-jerker to me. For those of you who don't know what that term means, it basically refers to something that operates mainly by trying to bring out intense sorrowful emotions and, in a lot of cases, include quick transitions from sad to happy and vice-versa. Filmmakers know that audiences will often come back for more if they associate the film with strong emotions, and especially a variety of those.

But that is kind of the point of some stories, guess it comes down to preference on if you like that kind of story telling. On that note: I usually do but not in HTTYD, I think it needed better developed characters to really achieve that aim.

HTTYD was a tearjerker? TS3 had a 20 minute long ending after the story resolved itself for purely tearjerking purposes. =P
