Computer issues, please help!

Postby Yumacub » January 8th, 2011, 6:23 pm

I didn't know where else to post this, so sorry in advance! :oops2:
But I really need help because my computer is not being a good friend to me.
So my audio won't work. I checked the speakers and they're plugged in, but when I go to volume control it says there is no audio device. And I recently added this thing called "audiosvr" to my registry, and ever since, my start button AND taskbar are missing! :(
Also I got a new mouse, and it wasn't working so I turned my computer on and off for many times... :huh5: But...That probably wasn't smart. So when I tried to turn on my computer, it says the configuration was corrupted, so I re-installed Windows XP AGAIN, and well...I really don't know what I was doing, just hitting buttons, typing stuff and whatever. :disappointed3: But I must've pressed the wrong default screen resolution, because when I tried to change it to make it smaller, the screen turns black for a moment and then says "cannot display this video mode". Can anyone help me??

I had an issue like this with a customer's machine a few weeks ago. His USB Broadband card stopped working and Microsoft Office as no longer recognizing it's license. I picked it up from the customer and his device manager was blank, no computer was listed. His Network Connections were all missing as well. After about a week of banging on it and everything I was reading online coming up with something in the registry being the problem, I rebooted and out of desperation went to what is known as "Last Known Good Configuration". What this does it pretty much rolls the registry back to a configuration that has worked in the past. And would you believe I had devices in Device Manager and Network connections had come back.

From what you described that's sounds like what might have happened.

Have you tried to get into safe mode and change the video resolution from there?

My sound stopped working once too, what happened was some kind of error that stopped all the drivers from working. I did the same thing as what leopard said, and fixed it myself :P although on Windows 7 you just system restore to last known date that was working.

Give XP credit, flip, it has System Restore too right? :P

Back on-topic, I think you need to get someone who is good with computers to help you reinstall Windows XP again, then help you get all your drivers working. Your video and audio problems could be due to lack of built-in drivers in Windows, and you might need to get them elsewhere.

I second Snowy's recommendation. I've spent DAYS trying to get a system back to square one after a reinstall. Drivers can be the hardest things to track down on the Internet. Probably best to have someone physically give it a once over.

If I hadn't wiped out the restore points when I started (had some malware floating around on it that was disabling the antivirus/firewall) I would have had it made when I figured out it was a registry glitch.

I think that your computer has lost its drivers, that will explain that screen and audio problem. if you have installed XP again, theres no drivers installed anymore. There's only two choices: Install drivers from your CDs, if you have 'em.
If not, take your computer and take it to nearest electronic shop, they will fix it.. (It costs a little.. <.<)

You can if you select Safe Mode with Networking, but that's dependent on if the driver for the network card is still installed. From what it sounds like though there's a good chance it isn't.

Well I have wireless Internet, and I got 2 errors when my anti-virus was scanning my computer. I went to a forum
and someone says I have to delete it in safe-mode.

Yeah. If there are viruses, they won't be run while in safe mode because the whole point of safe mode is to run only the things that are absolutely necessary.
