Handle With Care

Handle With Care

Postby MalibuTrashDog » September 6th, 2010, 5:43 am

This is a short poem/story thing I wrote one night when I was caught up in another bout of insomnia.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a hard decision to make to entrust you with my heart,
yet I had felt you would be able to give it the love and care that it needed.

I stood before you, clutching it tightly to my chest.

I looked you in the eyes and asked, "do you promise not to break it and keep it safe?"

You smiled at me and outstretched your hands eagerly, "I promise."

Slowly I placed it in your cupped palms, "be careful, it's very fragile."

And there my heart sat, all shiny and new in your hands.
It beat and hummed happily, radiating all my love for you.

Then suddenly it happened, I don't even know how, everything moved as if it were in slow motion.

I saw your hands fumble, your smile faltering,
I watched as my heart slid through your hands and fell towards the cold ground, shattering into a million small fragments.

I clutched at my chest and fell to my knees next to the mess, the pain was almost unbearable.

My body doubled over to protect what was left of my heart, my hair covered my face like a dark curtain.

You kneeled down next to me and touched my face with your hand, "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to!"

I cringe away from your touch as tears stream down my face, "we do things we don't mean but we end up doing them anyway, hurting the ones that love us..."

I started picking up the little shards of my heart, they were growing hard and sharp from the cold, the warmth was leaving it.

A few of the shards cut my hands, and I started to bleed.

You reached out to try and help me, " I can fix it..."

I pushed your hands away, "no, you said I could trust you, that you'd never break it..."

I gathered the pieces of my shattered heart in my bloodied hands and stood up to walk away.

You called out to me, "Please! I love you!"

I felt the remnants of my heart beat weakly at the sound of your voice, and a fresh wave of tears ran down my cheeks.

Yet I did not look back, I kept walking on.

As I walked with my broken, faintly beating heart, I wondered how many more times would it be able to withstand your carelessness and abuse.

How much longer before it would shatter beyond repair.

Dark, but a cool concept, SD. I actually thought it was never going to actually define 'it' as a heart, that would've been pretty cool, I think. It's a cool form you've chosen to write in, and it suits the material well. A few minor grammar and spelling errors to be rooted out. Some nice imagery, too. Good stuff, SD. I like it. :3

Ah thank you Az! I didn't think anyone would ever read any of my stuff haha. I'm not much of a writer but I do dabble here and there sometimes =)

Aww, I love this! Everyone can really relate to this little story, and I think that's what makes it great. Something that makes every person in the room feel some kind of empathy for the first character. Love it!
