People, please. I know the FIRST film's makers studied them to make the movements realistic. But they went to AFRICA too. Movements they could've gotten well enough for one simple cartoon film from studying them on any nature document.

But in any case, as Simba's Pride film is the more essential part for this question, they could use the first film as source well enough, but still they went to study the animals. Thus, there likely was more to it than just the movements.
If had been an animator working on SP, I would want to study real-life lions, not just use the first film/or a documentary as a reference.
Even though it was to be just a direct-to-video film and apparently low-budget anyway? Wouldn't you come up with a bit more of a reason for expensive travels than what you could easily get from the first film?
Scar is younger than Mufasa, yet his mane is darker. This is despite the natural fact that the older a lion is, the darker his mane becomes. That`s what I call an artistic liberty. That had to be taken for several reasons. Scar is the villain, for one. A black mane makes him look evil. Secondly, if all the male lions in the movie had brown manes, it perhaps be confusing for the kids and make it difficult to tell them apart.
We don't even know how much younger Scar is supposed to be or how old Scar and Mufasa were supposed to be. They could be from the same litter. And the darkness is not all about the age, I think. Scar could easily be the little brother and/or same age as Mufasa but have a black mane. "The presence, absence, color, and size of the mane is associated with genetic precondition, sexual maturity, climate, and testosterone production; the rule of thumb is the darker and fuller the mane, the healthier the lion." So, may not have been all artistic liberty.
You have to remember that in TLK, the lions behave more human-like than lion-like. It`s not supposed to be all that realistic or educational, it`s supposed to be entertaining. For children and adults alike. TLK is a family movie indeed, but primarily aimed at kids. Of course there`s nothing wrong with educating kids on realistc animal behaviour, but that`s not what TLK is aiming to do.
Again, looks design is not related to entertainment value the same way behaviour matters is. And how do you know that TLK isn't aiming to educate kids on the lions in other but behaviour matters? I don't know either but chances is they are, as they bothered to go through so much time and expence. It's hard for me to imagine they'd do all that just for the movements.

On The Lion King Laserdisc they say the storyline was also inspired by the study of real life lion behaviour. The directors wanted to capture the heart and colors of Africa so they went there for real.

They're not 100% real life lions. Hans Zimmer himself said he was able to make the music when he started to realize they weren't just animals and the story was about human experiences and human emotions. He wrote the score thinking about a 10 year old boy named Simba losing his father. I don't agree when someone says "but the lion pregnancy is only 3 months/but he has to be older than that because of the size of his mane" and things like that to justify TLK theories/facts.

Look at Nala's eyes, look at their eyebrows, look at them talk, falling in love and getting married. Yes they are lions, but they're also human and you can't deny that.

And about the SP crew not going to Africa... *sigh* for the last time, SP is a low-budget movie. They couldn't even afford it. Do you think they would spend money on a trip to Africa just to make a DTV sequel?

Well considering I have better things to do than argue with people about Kopa when they're obviously not going to get anything out of it, I'm going to leave my signature as it is and go do other things. Bye :)

I'm not denying that they are very much human inside and have some cartoony details to make them Disney lions. But as they studied the lions/animals closely and promote that fact related to their film making and the films don't have anything solid to prove that they didn't follow the lion aging biology, I do believe the aging biology facts are valid enough facts for theories.

And they sure did care enough to have babies tails correct and Simba have first less mane and then full mane, so apparently they did pay attention to physical developments during growth.

I know I said I wouldn't post untill this whole thing was over, but I couldn't help reading this...all. of. it.

I'm actually worried.

Buuut ontopic (slightly)
As an artist and animator, let me tell you. You can tell NOTHING from videos of animals. The only REAL way to find out what they're like is to spend time with them and even put them in situations to see how they might react.
Example: They bought a horse for the movie Spirit, so they could tell how a horse reacts to stuff. I have been working with horses for 15/16 years and even now I'm learning stuff about them. You really need to be there to draw and animate properly.
For instance, if I told you to draw/animate my favourite horse, going into the show ring. What would you do? Going my photos and the video I have...I doubt many people could get it right, even the pro's.
To REALLY know, I'd want to ride the horse, see him ridden by someone else, take photos, videos, compare him to other horses, see if he'd react differently if another horse was infront of him. All of these things make a HUGE difference to that horse, so you can never tell everything by some videos and photos.
(If you're interested, he's the horse in my Siggy and he's mad. To get him into a show ring, you must ride him in BACKWARDS! Or he'll rear up and refuse. Mad thing, but I love him)

That'd be why TLK1 has real weight to it and you can tell Mufasa is a big lion and very very heavy when he falls from the cliff, but when Zira and Kiara fall, they are like plushies, tumbling down there!
I saw they even brought a few lions into the concept artists studios during TLK1 for them to draw (very jealous)

But REALLY back on-topic.
I really don't know and I don't care to think THAT much about it.
Maybe if I ever work for Disney, I'll let you know.

I think the main issue made here was if they could've got the aging process according to real life, and not the behaviour. And the first mentioned ought to be possible without travelling all the way to Africa. o.o

I'm gonna pull an Annie and post again, as well, then I'm gone. This thread has gone way off-topic, and has basically turned into a crapstorm of arguing and flaming. Perhaps we should let it be what it was before, and discuss, rather than argue our points somewhere appropriate.

I've drawn Kopa for a long time and I STRONGLY beleive in him as Canon. I've been in this kinda argument before so I'm just posting my opinions.

Please don't expect a reply.

(and to answer the topic's question, I believe Simba had two cubs)
