Could a Lioness rule the Pridelands?

Yes, basically canon means official but most ultimately it means the original work of a fiction in a fandom. In this fandom's case, the purest canon is the first film alone, and an essential part of it is the commentary track by the film's creators - obviosuly because the film's content came from their creativity and minds.

Some don't consider the SP film as canon for many more or less valid reasons, but mostly because its script, direction and animation were not done by the same people who created the TLK film which is the purest canon. But SP is official sequel because it nontheless was created and developed by the official The Walt Disney Company people.

I think the bloodline determinds who rules. Kiara will become Queen and rule the Pridelands just like Simba and Mufasa did. Kovu will become King upon marrying Kiara, but I think Kiara will be the one to hold the power, considering she`s royalty and recieved training.

Simba also says to Kiara in SP: "..and I need you to carry on in my place." and "As future Queen.." I think this implies strongly that Kiara will be the ruler, the one who holds the power and makes the laws and descicions.

Of course a lioness could not rule the Pride Lands alone, but neither could a male lion. The heir to the throne would always have to find a mate in order to have cubs and continue the royal bloodline. But like I said, I don`t think gender matters in the TLK world, I think the lion with royal blood has the power, regardless of gender.

I would believe so, she should be able to rule her own kingdom. I'm going to say whoever has the royal bloodline would probably have a higher rank than their mate, though, like PrincessKiara says.

Yeah, it just doesn't seem or feel right that some non-royal-blooded dude would get to make the laws and all. What would be the point of the royal blood if the gender was what mattered more?

True, it would be well unfair if it worked like that. But the non-royal lion should still be able to set down laws, but he or she would probably have to talk them over with the royal lion, you know?

Yeah, agreed. I could see the non-royal king or queen having the same responsibilities and rights than the royal one to some extent but literally laying down of the laws and punishments and all that kind of crucial stuff would have to go through/be done by the royal one.
